I think Cherry Point Marine Air Station is in the area where Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 lives. She isn't there now, she was able to get much further inland.

denice denice - Yep; MCAS/CP shares a common border with Havelock, in fact - but there might be other TCS members in the same general area who couldn't get out, and who might avail themselves of the Marines' hospitality. There isn't much on earth as hospitable nor as luxurious as a Marine Corps barracks.

Sending wishes of safety and hope to all those experiencing the hurricane. :grouphug:

Wish I could send tons of Feliway and comfy, plush, round sleepy beds to de-stress and comfort all the kitties, too! I've never experienced a hurricane, I can't imagine the noise and fear it can cause kitties.

Hekitty and I are safe and sound in Reedy Creek, NC. We're tucked in with wonderful people. Ya'll pray for my host. He is having open heart surgery on Monday, came up VERY suddenly. But his housekeeper and I get along SO well. STILL don't know, and probably won't until Monday, if I still have a home, but all is well with us, at least. Prayers for all of those left behind, and MANY for my ferals. I cry every time the alarm on my computer goes off to feed them.

The wi fi is VERY slow and spotty I'm betting overloaded systems.

Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 i have seen an abundance of pictures on the news of citizens helping animals. I saw that cats outside made it through okay. Even the news crews were feeding a kitty and giving it water. Bet they took it with them! I am sure the cats are taking advantage of mice and other small things that have been run out. Cats are survivors. If anyone in that area is reading our posts, you know they will be looking out for them. Prayers are being said and all positive thoughts sent for them.

"It never rains but it pours"...
I hope your host gets through surgery well.
The weather forecast does indicate most of the rain will be out of North Carolina by sometime Monday

Got some questions for anybody with more understanding of hurricanes than I have.

Florence is now a tropical storm, not a hurricane, but it's still very wet and windy. As I understand it, it's the approach to and arrival at land that leeched power from it, resulting in progressive downgrades. Is this correct?

I've been watching either TWC or MSNBC all day, seeing the maps with the projected path of Florence, and I note that after turning North it's expected to swing back east and head out to sea again. But those maps don't show what happens then. Does anybody know whether it will likely be on course for, say, Puerto Rico? And is it likely to pick up steam and go back to hurricane levels in the process?

@margret - To the latter - No. Hurricanes - and any rotating storm cells - are basically convection engines; they form and grow stronger over warm water, and once over a land mass, they lose strength, eventually fizzling out like those sparklers you had as a kid that got wet and then dried out.

As a storm crosses a large swath of warm water, the warm, moisture-laden air is drawn upwards, and the cold air which it displaces is expelled, eventually creating a vortex - albeit on a very large, slow-moving scale. If you're ever watched a waterspout form in Summer when the water is warm, you already understand how rotating storms are born and - as they move over a cooler, drier surface - how they perish as well.

1CatOverTheLine 1CatOverTheLine has a better answer about the science of hurricanes and circulating storm systems above...

I'm not a weather expert, but my understanding of how hurricanes gain and lose strength over open water is related to water temperature and wind shear. Warmer water temperatures increase hurricane strength. That's why Florence increased from a category 3 to a 5 as it approached the US.
Wind shear tends to weaken hurricanes. Wind shear is tied to the jet stream and other weather highs and lows nearby.

When the eye of a hurricane approaches land, the parts of the storm not over the warm water lose energy (partially through rain) and the storm weakens. When the eye moves onshore, the storm loses strength rapidly.
If the eye of Florence had drifted southward and remained offshore, the storm would have remained stronger for a longer time.

...the maps with the projected path of Florence, and I note that after turning North it's expected to swing back east and head out to sea again. But those maps don't show what happens then...

The storm will continue to diminish in energy as it passes over land. As the storm weakens, the path of the storm will be guided by the jet stream and other weather patterns across the eastern US.
The ocean waters off the northeastern US are not warm enough to provide the energy required to regenerate a hurricane.
In general, once a storm is eastbound from the USA, it heads across the North Altantic towards Europe following the jet stream.

There have been hurricanes that loop offshore and restrengthen, but these hurricanes move offshore into very warm ocean waters to be able to regain strength.

1CatOverTheLine 1CatOverTheLine , foxden foxden , thank you so much for your explanations.

1CatOverTheLine 1CatOverTheLine , while I got a notification that you'd responded to the thread, I did not receive a notification that you'd mentioned me, because I'm not margaret; I'm Margret. (You can blame it on my mother, who decided to get creative. And yes, I actually did receive a birthday card from my mother with my name spelled wrong one year! 1987 - bad year for birthdays.) In point of fact, we have no one on TCS with the user name @margaret.

Margret Margret - My sincere apologies for having called you by another name. I understand that under certain circumstances, that can make women extremely unhappy.
