i'll heat up the last of the chicken nuggets, and serve them with the honey-mustard dipping sauce. i may cut up some carrots, and have some carrot and celery (already have some cut up) pieces with caesar salad dressing as a dip.

    Story time...

Friday night we went to a favorite hang out to celebrate a friend's birthday. It was busy, and we had a large-ish party (9), and the place doesn't do reservations.

Okay. So the first few people of the party show up and ask to put on the list for a large table. They were told they couldn't put on a list until the entire party was there. We show up 10 minutes later, bringing the party to 5, and they still wouldn't put us on a list. The rest of the party shows up 15 minutes later, and they put us on the list. Mind you, this means that the first few folks have already been there for 25 minutes. We are told that it might be about 45 more minutes till a table opens up.

As it happens, the large tables are near the pool tables, so we decide to hang out there and get a few games in. Also, since we know it's going to be a while, we order drinks and apps from the bar. Drinks come out reasonably quickly, but apps take about 30 minutes (they were not difficult apps, but they were busy, so).

Now, since we were close by the large party tables, we could see when one table cleared out... sort of. Apparently a party of 3 decided to make themselves comfortable at the end of the large table. I watched as the server came and took their order and served their drinks. By that time, we had been waiting for our table for an hour and a half (timed by texts).

So I went back to the front and caught one of the main waiters that I'd seen running around.
Me: "Excuse me, who is in charge of seating."
Him: "Well, we all are, kinda"
Me: "Okay, well, we have a large party and we are supposed to be on a list..."
Him: "Oh, well, it's Friday night and we're really busy"
Me: "I can see that, but we've been waiting for an hour and a half"
Him: "Well, you can see we only have a few large tables and they're taken up"
Me: "I can see that one of the large tables has 3 people seated at it, how do 3 people get seated at a large table when you have a large party waiting for it?"
Him: "Well, we have to seat whoever gets here first"
Me: "We've BEEN here... for an hour and a half. We've had drinks and apps, but we'd like to sit down and have dinner!"
Him: "Look, it's Friday night, and we're really busy! We'll get to you when we can!"

Needless to say, this was not what I wanted to hear. I went back to the group growling. 3 of our folks took their leave. Then, the guy who invited us all on this little outing went to talk to the same waiter I talked to. Now, you have to understand, our friend is built like a Viking (and has the long hair and beard to help). After he comes back... guess what happens... suddenly the waiters are putting a couple tables together for our group.

Why is it when a woman complains, she's a b!tc#, but when a big guy complains it's "Johnny jump to it"?

Oh, and I had a chicken tika masala salad and a glass of Zin (Paseo Robles).

@furmonster mom that's why we don't go to certain restaurants in this area. We've had that happen. We've also been seated, waited over an hour, just to get drinks and menus, while people next to us, who came in 15 minutes after we did, got their menus and such right away. Got their drinks, while we're still waiting. It's really frustrating.

I ended up marinating the chicken breasts for a couple of hours, then grilled them on the indoor grill. Wait some mac-and-cheese and a salad.

Not sure about tonight; there's a bit going on and I don't expect to be home much before 7:30 or 8:00. Something quick from the freezer.

I'm on my way, as well. And I LIKE washing dishes. And organizing cabinets, if you need a bit of that done!

Tonight? Oh, heck. Hot dogs. Cheese and onions! I'm halfway thinking about cutting them in two length-wise and cooking them on sliced bread like a grilled cheese sandwich.

    :flail:

I ate the leftover mac and cheese; Rick had some Chunky soup. We didn't get home until later and it was quick.

Grilled salmon with a salad tonight. Salmon was on sale at the grocery store.

I LIED! I had tuna salad, mostly because Ms. Hekitty kept sitting next to her "tuna soup" bowl and looking pitiful. But hot dogs tonight, and I'm SO looking forward to them!

It might be simple machism, but it can also be all about " the looks".

9 times out of ten I will be told that I have a very sweet face. Friendly. Kind. I get random smiles from people I don't know in the street because I am smiling and they smile back. Waiters call me Spanish version of "honey" or "sweetie" ("cielo" like "heaven"). Policemen give me big friendly smiles. I think you get the general idea. It is not that I am pretty, no one looks at me with admiral in their eyes, I just look friendly, I guess.

But the tenth time is what matters. I am not tall, just medium. I don't have dark eyes, nor dark hair, nor any other " darkness" in my persona that could be phisicaly intimidating. What I do have is a very light skin that blushes in less than a second, light brown eyes that are slightly too big for my face, the look of a teacher and a very strange mixture of vocabulary (which happens if you are a philologist and have been among horses since you are 6). I have been compared to Valkirias. I have been called the avenger angel of the Lord. The secret is taking all the fair, justified wrath you've ever felt, let it warm you from the inside and then squeeze it into your softer, sweetest, most angelic voice. I pair that tone with long, high register words and a deliberately slow rythm. Same voice I use with stubborn students. Apparently, it is very scary and I look much taller than I am. There is just something inside most people that connects them with their childhood memories, and if you manage to resemble the figure of authority of their teacher, 90% of the job is done.

Broccoli and chicken breast for dinner, yay!

I come from a family of restaurateurs. My grandparents ran a tavern/pool hall, and my dad ran 3 burger joints and then 3 pizza restaurants. So, I'm very familiar with the way things can go. There is just no excuse for blowing off a customer with a legitimate complaint.

Honestly, the whole fiasco could have been avoided if they'd just had a "host" system for seating: one person in charge of getting people the most optimum seating in the most efficient way possible. They also needed a dedicated busser and a floating waitperson for the bar area. I don't know if they were short staffed, but they were definitely not very organized. And for a Friday night, with an event in the back room, they should have been better prepared.

Secondly, the person who took the order for the 3 people should have instead said something along the lines of "I'm sorry, but we have a large party waiting for this table, can I seat you somewhere else?"

And finally, the waiter I spoke with should have said something like, "I am very sorry, I know you've been waiting for a long time. Let me get this order in, and I'll see about setting something up for you guys." He could have even then asked the party of 3 if they wouldn't mind sharing the long table with us.

But meh... done is done. I still like the place, I'll just have to avoid it on event nights.

Tonight will be leftover stuffed peppers (Costco), and veggies (probably asperagus & mushrooms).

    Tomorrow (Valentines) is bait night.

Well, come on down! I can use all the help I can get with washing and organizing...and eating all this food.

For dinner tonight I had leftover enchiladas (surprise!) for the 4th day in a row. The rest just went into the freezer in individual servings.

You're having bait for dinner tomorrow night? :headscratch:

...and I agree with you on the poor service. You should cut and paste all the improvement suggestions you just wrote into a letter and send it to the restaurant owner and manager. Maybe they'll give you a gift certificate and perhaps even take some of the suggestions.

Bait = sushi (and is a pun on "date", that's my hubby)

And I've considered writing a letter, but I honestly don't know that it will make a difference. They've been open at that location for a couple years now. It's in our "arts district" and event nights are fairly frequent. So if they don't have their sh--tuff together by now... :dunno:

Never heard sushi called bait before. I was imagining minnows.

You all ready have the letter written (above). I would send it. Only good, or "neutral", could come of it.

LOL, I'm doing hot dogs again tonight, because they are there and easy and you KNOW how I am about the darned things! Tomorrow night, I'm going to do a small steak. With something. I forgot that I had three of them in the freezer, and found them about an hour ago.
