pearl99 pearl99 Lost his head feathers?!? Aww!
I think that many species are spreading as climates shift, humans shift and we encroach into the environment. We have had reports of lots of creatures coming up from the coastline. It seems that having humans retreat to being indoors has also given the creatures a feeling of being safe to venture out as well. I don’t know all the whys but I am always glad to see the beauty of nature.
I want cardinals here! Come on, cardinals! My favorite bird.

It has been very hot here and not a whisper of a breeze. I opened the door for awhile and also sat out on the front porch to enjoy slightly cooler temperatures.

The cats are thinking! Lol

Hey Blue! Look! Mom is outside the window.

She’s doing it again! Going outside and leaving her cat guard inside.

Be careful out there mom! Some things out there have big ears. If you see that..... stand very still and don’t look at it.

If I hook a claw in this screen, I think I can open the door for you.

Come on everybody. I think that if we all use our claws, we can get mom back inside.

Do this!

If we let mom in then...... things with big ears can come in too! We better look first.

Did you see any big ears Whistle?

What’s out there? I hear stuff.

Maybe you hear this bug?!?!?

I wanted to come back in but cats were leaning against the door. How do you get a cat to move?

You stick the camera under the door.

Something is coming in Lady.

I see it too BJ. Do we leave or attack?

They backed off enough for me to open the door without having a cat fall out. I love that picture. Curious cats!

Have a great night everyone! :heartshape:

pearl99 pearl99 I saw Cardinals today! They are plentiful here. I have found that if I turn the sprinkler in and put it under low tree branches, they come to take a shower when it’s hot. I love watching them dance around in the puddles and flipping their wigs as they sit in the droplets as they fall in the trees. They always bring their family too. They are beautiful birds.

I saw a few when I went to Arizona last year. I will have to wait till next year for a trip to Ohio to see them. My dad took pictures of them in the snow.

It is fun to spot the red. Of all the birds, their color is the easiest to see. A scarlet Tanager is another that shows up here. Just during migration though. Beautiful birds. I like the song of the cardinals too. They have a sweet voice. Listening for this may make it easier to know when they are near.

That just got the attention of the kitties!

J Johnv713 Thank you! I agree and she is a very funny cat! That is Banjo and she was rescued as a kitten along with her brother, Whistle. Like many here, I struggled with caring for a colony of feral cats. The struggles are all well worth the efforts and expense. The kitties return it all with vast amounts of love and laughter.

The love between Banjo and Whistle.

Banjo loves all creatures and her Prince is a frog! Lol

Blue Jays are so pretty. I have gotten quite a peck from patent Birds too. Jays and Movkingbirds can give a hard tap with that beak! Lol Protecting their young. I have seen them chase others creatures too, including hawks and kitties. Both ran away.
That is such a sweet story about the family of jays. I am betting it was the same group. There has been research done that shows that Crows have facial recognition of humans so I expect that extends to the jays too. They know who can be trusted. Kindness is not forgotten. I’d love to see some pictures!

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 Indeed they do attach to those they trust. They are also wonderful at sounding an alarm when anything threatens those they care about. I can always tell a little about the safety for animals, birds and humans by listening to the type of calls the blue jays make. They work as a group too. If there is a threat, they join together to repel intruders. Azul is a purrfect name. I hope the little bird survives too. She was a feisty one so I have great hope for her. She had already survived “on a wing and a prayer.” She has a flock of humans hoping for her now.
I never seem to have a device handy when they're around. Jays used to bug me because they can be aggressive toward cats, divebombing them. I can even discern their vocalization when they see one. It sounds just like, "CAT!!!" to me. People are pretty good about keeping their cats indoors around here, so I don't hear that call these days. But the jays and the mockingbirds are always having set-tos and so are the mockingbirds and crows. Everyone seems to leave the conures alone, which is good. But the conures tend to fly as a flock and settle high in a tree together, stay a few moments, and then fly on, as a flock. Sometimes I'll see single ones or pairs, or small groups, but usually it'll be a flock. They're absolutely spellbinding to watch. People just don't expect to see them in L.A. but they've been here for several years and they're all over CA.

This goes back to 1987, when some friends of ours took in a stray cat, and were trying to decide on a name for him. From his appearance, I suggested 'Adolf', and boy did the name turn out to be appropriate.

Since we're on the topic of birds, can anyone identify this little guy?
Not great pics, as he was in the neighbour's yard by the time I got my camera.

That is a Northern Flicker. Yes they peck on things! I have some that hang out on the telephone pole in my back yard and peck away. Luckily they've never pecked on my house.
