Awe! Everyone leaves so soon! It is so bittersweet. You will miss them, but they are going to great homes. Plus you will have room for the next momma that needs you. <3 definitely would love pictures before they go!

Hi all
Sorry I haven't been on for a few days.
The latest is Elsa and her babies are leaving tomorrow and the kittens will go to their new homes and Elsa will spend a few nights at the shelter before her spay on Friday. I'm actually kinda glad because I thought it would be especially hard for her to be in the same place with the scent of her kittens around her, without them.

In other news, I went to visit my sweet Pippin today. They are a little worried about her as her weight gain has stalled but they are now giving her some bottles as well. But when I saw her, I thought she was huge!

Her eyes aren't bulging as they did before because her face is growing into them.

Do you know the best bit??? She's been offered a home!! Someone came to the cattery and out of all the kittens there, picked out Pippin! She's not a "typically" pretty cat but I adore her personality because she has such determination and I thought someone would fall in love with that rather than her looks. I was almost contemplating breaking my "no adopting" rule for my fosters for Pippin if she hadn't a home lined up. Didn't think it'd be this soon!

So are you still thinking of taking in Pippin's foster mom & her kittens?

How are Silky & co. doing today?

I'll see what the shelter need me to do as Pippin is doing so well where she is, it might be better to leave her there and maybe take another mammy.

I've no idea would Silky still recognise Pippin and Mac...would it cause a problem if she maybe smelled them nearby?!

Silky is a funny one, as you all probably know. She seems to do better with her babies if she's locked in the crate with them. With Elsa, I allowed her to roam around the room out of the crate and return to it when her babies needed her. If I do this with Silky, and give her more freedom, her behaviour deteriorates.

She seems to remember to be their mom when in the crate with them and I let her out under supervision a couple of times a day.

I left her out more yesterday and found her "playing" with a kitten (holding him in her paws and kicking with her back legs) last night. She stopped as soon as I reminded her to be gentle.

I'd say though she's at about 90-95% "good mom" now though. The kittens are clean and are gaining weight steadily and her attitude is much calmer with them.

We got some photos of Elsa's kittens - each kitten with the child who named it. The group shot was hilarious though as Lilly kept climbing up onto my son's shoulder/neck!!

Beautiful kittens and beautiful family! You've done an amazing job...with all three little families! Thanks for sharing your story. I've read every post!

It is crazy how similar our situations are with Silky and my Blake and her kittens. We had to lock her in with her kittens a few times a day to get her to mother them at all. Then she seemed to settle with them and will go in the tiny carrier with them and nurse and clean them, although they are rapidly outgrowing it, I hope when I move them to a bigger crate she doesn't freak out and start ignoring them again!

Bittersweet evening yesterday. We said goodbye to Elsa's family. The new owners were all very excited to be getting their kittens.

Elsa was very relaxed in the shelter, not upset in any way. Just lay down and slept. Probably delighted to have some peace and quiet lol.

A very frightened mammy cat with 3 new born kittens (less than a week old, maybe only 4-5 days by my reckoning) was handed in to the shelter. Poor thing was so scared she took ages to catch when she got out of the box. There was nowhere for her to escape to but she was going crazy to stay away from the humans who were only trying to help her.

I hope after a nights rest and some food that she's more settled. She looked healthy and well cared for, more like a pet than a feral cat.

Adoption days here are always bittersweet. I am sure they will thrive in their homes! Great to hear that Elsa was fine!
I know we would all love to see pictures of the new family when they settle in! I sometimes use Rescue Remedy- its an oil you add to the water to help nervous cats relax some- I have never used it on nursing moms though!

No, not unless she becomes totally placid when she's less scared! She was vicious yesterday. Like a cartoon cat where all you see is a spinning ball of fluff with claws. A lot of claws. It'd be too dangerous to have her in the house with my kids if she's that nervous.

Silky had a fantastic day in terms of feeding - the weight gains were ALL 28-33g!!

However she was in a contrary mood today. Her kittens were calling her and wandering around the nest with their tails up (is that to do with needing to per? One peed in the bed then).

She came over but was playing with them, trying to catch them through the bars of the crate and just being silly. I told her "no" a few times in a stern tone and she stopped each time but it was only when I put her in the crate and closed the door that she remembered. She tried to clean up the pee accident and started to feed. I changed the blanket and she tried to leave the crate but I put her back in and it was like she resigned herself to the fact that she was "mom" for the next while.

Poor Silky - kind of like a teenage mom who would rather have someone else take care of the baby.

Elsa is scheduled for her spay tomorrow, right? Then up for adoption?

It totally is a teen attitude! She can be so good with encouragement but it just doesn't come naturally.

I'm fascinated by the colour of the kittens. Far from all being black and white, they are now more grey and white and Maverick has faint tabby markings. Maybe it's just the ghost markings but you can even see the tabby "M" on his face!

Oreo is quite a light shade compared to the others. Bruce is the darkest though Pippin was always the darkest when she was here.

Elsa is booked for her spay on Friday and someone is already lined up to take her for her forever home then.

daisyd daisyd Aww welcome to the thread! It's been quite a journey. Fostering is the best ever as you get to love all these babies and see them growing up ready for their new homes and then you can do it all again!

When I started fostering last October, it was orphaned kittens that I was fostering - from 5 weeks up so they were already on solids but were too young to place in their forever home. At that stage I just kept them in my kitchen and they mingled with my kids, cats and dog so they were well socialised by the time they left!

I didn't need a separate room until I took in pregnant mammas. Maybe that could be an option for you?

Thank you ! I know I have tons of love to give and hubby does what I want him to (in the end).
