Thank you all for your kind words.

We are going in for a check-up and second opinion to a different vet today at 3pm EST. Anything I should ask them besides current pain level?

I will post an update not long after.

Maybe take the Quality of Life Quiz again and take along. If she is still scoring high, discuss that with them and see if they concur. Sometimes as their caregivers we don't always see things the same way as the Vet sees them, but also don't let them talk you into something if you don't think it's right. Have them explain it to you thoroughly if you don't agree right off the bat.

Great idea!

I have been doing quality of life scores since we discovered she has cancer in November.... she was always 67/70 but the last few days I would say it’s more like 63.

Hello everyone, my apologies in advance if this is the incorrect place to post.

My cat is very sick and we are nearing the end and will have to euthanize her soon.

I was wondering what kind of ideas everyone has that we could do to go out with a bang. Like food wise what would be yummy... activities, etc.

She is still mobile and has a great appetite... the only thing I wouldn’t want to do with her is anything involving jumping as she has an ulcerating tumor.

I have been crying for a few days now non-stop and I relly just want to have some fun with her while we still can.

We live in Ontario, Canada if that helps with any of the suggestions.
I am so sorry to hear about your cat. If she is used to wet food then I would recommend meat flavored baby food. I fed that to my baby before he passed and he loved it! My heart goes out to you during this extremely difficult time.

Things did not go well at the vet, did x-rays and her lungs are filled with tumors. Got a new antibiotic Clindamycin.

Vet said at most a few days.

About 30 mins ago she started wheezing as if she is trying to cough up a hairball but nothing is coming out. This goes off and on. She is now back to eating treats. Maybe the new antibiotic (huge pill) was just too big for her?

I don’t want to rush my decision but the vets close in 30 mins. There is a 24/7 emergency vet though.

:(.

Did YOU give the antibiotic, or did they do it at the Vets office? Was it chased with some water? Why the new antibiotic? Any steroids for the tumors to try to shrink them some?

What did they think her numbers were on the Q of L scale? I guess you've commited to not doing at home euthanasia?

We ended up having to take our last kidney cat to an emergency clinic in the end because it was a Sunday. They were absolutely fantastic with her (and us). It cost more, but we didn't care because it needed to be done then and there :bawling:

I'm so sorry it wasn't better news. :alright:

I gave her the antibiotic and let her eat and drink water. I actually called the vet back right after and they were supposed to give us a syringe to chase down with water as you suggested. I reused the syringe from Metacam.

The wheezing/coughing hasn’t happened in about 20 mins now so I think that was it.

The new antibiotic was because the ulcerating tumor smelled beyond terrible and none of the current/previous 3 helped with the infection it seems. She was actually saying we are running out of antibiotics to try at this point. Offered to do a culture but it takes 3-4 days at which point my kitty might not even be around anymore...

I had actually asked about a steroid shot/Prednisone and was told that would only help in lymphoma style cancer and not metastasized mammary cancer like this. Also asked about any experimental drugs and such... was told there is nothing and that I have already done more than most would do by going to see the oncologist.

I wasn’t really expecting much from this 2nd opinion (besides my brain hoping this was all a bad dream and all is actually well). My wife did say the new x-rays gave her closure in the fact that the sickness is what it is and that it wasn’t misdiagnosed or anything. I on the other hand... I don’t even know. It made everything more real and I kind of have to face the facts. They compared a healthy cats x-ray of the lungs to my kitty cat and it’s like night and day.

She just had another coughing/wheezing fit... guess it wasn’t the pill after all.

I'm so terribly sorry, it is like reliving what I had already seen. I know your pain too well.
I think you have to prepare for the worst.
Be kind to your little princess, and spare her another trip to the vet. It is time to call the vet home :(:(:( believe me, you won't regret it.

I am sorry if it brougt back bad memories for you. It is truly heart wrenching to feel this.

When I look at my other cats I feel very confused now. I have had cats all my life but I never want to go through this again... selfish maybe but holy hell is it painful. I know there’s the saying “better to have love and lost than never loved at all.” Well f* that.

I don’t know what to do, I love cats with all of my heart but I am emotionally and mentally dead from all of this (not to mention when my previous cat passed away).

Yes, it is so hard. When my husband stopped working and was home all alone with our little girl cat it was just the two of them together while I was at work for very long hours each day and they were so close that when she died he said "no more, I can't stand the pain of losing them". I was devastated too, but wanted and NEEDED to have a furry beastie in my life, having always had them ever since I was a child. Finally, about six months after she died, we were out driving and we stopped at a Petsmart and my husband told me to go inside and pick out a cat. He said he couldn't go in with me because the hurt was still too deep. But I did and they had a Calico, which was what I had wanted for a long time. I adopted her and brought her out to the car. She instantly became HIS cat! I swear they were made for each other and for 15 years they were so "in love". When she died of kidney disease a couple years ago I thought he would never make it, as our other two cats (adopted later) were all mine. They barely gave him the time of day. But instinctively, one of them immediately started going to him and really helped him through it. I can only hope your other cats will help YOU and your wife though this difficult time. Remember, they will grieve too, in their own way.

I'm so sorry you can't save her. But you can save her from suffering when the time comes :hugs:

You get through it because you give what little you still have to comfort the remaining cats who are grieving for their friend. At least that is what helped me.
