@Chasethecat Have you found any help yet or do you need more information? I do see some clinics in your area but I don’t know exactly what you need. Sorry it took me a bit to get you tagged here. This is a great forum to find help for ferals, rescues and TNR. You may find some info right here or you may need to PM me to get more. If you still need assistance, why don’t you start by just sharing with us and then the wonderful people here can all help to direct you to where you need to be.

BJ is proving to be an interesting cat. He is quite a watch dog cat. He is very tuned in to any activities going on outside. I found that he is alerting me whenever something is stirring nearby. He was aware that a vehicle of some sort had come onto my property. I would not have noticed as quickly without his attention to the area. I chained off the area today to try to prevent it from happening again. The land can still be accessed by ATV but it won’t be as easy now. This explains some of his changes in behavior. Good to know.
Tonight when he called me to supper I found him hiding behind the curtains. When I pulled them back he hissed at me. I talked to him and reached to pet him. He turned his back on me which is a statement that says I don’t want to acknowledge you. I pulled out the hairbrush and stroked his back and everything changed. He loves the brush. After a thorough brushing I was allowed to pet and scratch him all over and he purred happily. Once he turned to face me we moved on to food. He insists that I stand between him and the doir while he eats so I positioned myself as his guard. I offered a plate but he would not eat. I offered treats, no response. Finally I offered human food. Still no interest. Then I showed him that the food was safe to eat by eating some of the food ( fortunately for me I had offered human food) After I ate two bites I offered it back to him and after watching me take one more bite he decided it was okay to eat. He ate freely after that as long as I stokd in front of the door. I tried to move away but he immediately stopped eating. It seems he needs the comfort of a guardian right now. After eating he got more brushing and petting. I attempted to turn out the lights for bed but he started crying. I am now leaving the outside and inside lights on for him. I think he wants to feel hidden behind the curtain but still be able to observe what is outside. I will do whatever makes him feel safe.
I am truly exhausted tonight and he is calling me again so I am going back to him. He calls for a reason and I will pay attention. It’s going to be up and down with BJ for some nights to come but getting up with him seems to help him.
I got some new pictures of him tonight as he was trying to hide behind the curtains. Since he calls to me I don’t think he hides from me. I hope I can learn what he is hiding from and put a stop to what is scaring him. It is our bedtime so I will post his pictures and head to bed.

Using the brush really helps to beak the ice.

I hope your three girls stay calm and end up with a loving home. It must be so hard to see them go, I think it's amazing that you can put their well being ahead of your own interests every time. I know we can't keep them all, but it is really difficult to say good bye to them. Even though we know it's for the best.

BJ sounds like he's become your guardian, after you were his for so long.

What a wonderful boy! Those big old tom cats really are just the sweetest things once you've won their hearts.

Stay safe, I hope you can catch up on your sleep this evening.

I had a similar experience with Demi. He alerted us to a fire across the street, and we were able to call 911 in time. The neighbors were burning and the wind started to blow the fire dangerously close to a backhoe filled with gasoline. I swear one day they are going to blow us & the entire state forest up. :headshake:

Jcatbird Jcatbird - Yep - once a feral can "teach" you what they want and what makes them feel safe, they're already well on their way to teaching themselves to become "regular cats" - and regular cats are the very best kind of cats.

I think he wants to feel hidden behind the curtain but still be able to observe what is outside. I will do whatever makes him feel safe.
I wonder if it's time for a cardboard box in his room. White Tip and Oz, and Black Friday and Clawed-Ya both benefited tremendously from a simple cardboard box "safe place," and I'm convinced that those silly little hiding spots accelerated their sense of safety and hence, their socialisation, in dramatic fashion.

When the horse stalls in the barn were occupied by the TNR visitors, cardboard boxes provided safe havens for them as well. Boxes would be occupied for a few minutes before food was set down, and then cats would come rushing out, forgetting all about that dangerous Human. "De minimis non curat lex," in most cases, however, "de minimis curat cattus," unfailingly. Sometimes the smallest comforts are the greatest tools for ferals.

Bravo to both you and BJ; Mills of the Gods.

Hooray for being trapped in a room with an enraged feral - I love that feeling! The screams - both feline and Human - the electricity in the air, the bracing sting of alcohol on fresh bites and scratches!
That explains so much! Hekitty is actually a feral!

Well...I go missing for a few days, and the world turns upside down! Kitties going to homes, wild men moving inside...ALL GOOD STUFF! And BJ really is settling in pretty well, all things considered. I had thought it might actually be another day or so before he started really coming out of that frozen mode. AND he's an excellent watch-cat, to boot! You might want to consider him as permanent, if only to alert you to trespassers!

Isn't it amazing what a cat will do for Temptations?
Yes, it is, but they almost certainly made my cats sick, so I will no longer buy them and I counsel others not to, either. We are not alone in this. There's a thread here on TCS on the subject, as well.
tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 - I believe this is the thread to which you're referring, yes?

DO NOT BUY Temptations Cat Treats, They are slowly killing your cats & Whiskas is not doing anything

My cats either will not tolerate Temptations, or cannot tolerate them, yet all eleven of them like Friskies Party Mix treats, and none of them have ever gotten ill from them.

Yes, that's the thread. People say not to post that, but it's true. MANY cats have suffered because of these things. Something in them is very addictive to cats. Way beyond just liking them. They truly will do anything for them. That is suspicious right there.
I think I bought one package of the Friskies a long time ago, and there were no ill effects.
I used to buy Greenies, and no bad effects from those.
Now, I give nothing except Drs. Foster & Smith dental treats. They're similar to the Greenies. They like them, and no bad effects.

I really want to bring you some nice black kitties Jcatbird. I'm worried what someone might do to them with Halloween coming. Here's one of them. He's very charming and loves to be petted. We didn't tip his ear because I thought he might be tame enough to be adoptable, but they didn't think he was friendly enough.

Here's another one. He's pretty feral, but loves to be petted:

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 Thank you for sharing that link on this thread. I really appreciate that. I am also glad to see that there some published information about Temptations. Normally I do not feed those to my cats but I needed an irresistible bait to lure BJ in. Now that I have BJ willing to respond to me and eating he will not receive any more. I have also found the long-term feeding of those treats to my cats results in my cat getting sick. I have not tried the treats you mentioned but I will look for those. Thank you for the help!
