Hi, all you lovely cat people. My boy kitty just got diagnosed with kidney disease about a month ago, during which time I've been reading like a madwoman and educating myself on my options for him. I finally overcame my needle-phobia and have begun giving him regular subcutaneous fluids at home, and now I'm looking for a cheap supplier of lactated Ringer's solution in the USA.

I see several places online mention being able to find cases of twelve at Walmart or Costco for around $25, but I've been to every pharmacist in town, and they all quote me closer to $150.

Is there a reputable, reliable source you guys use? I'm desperate here.

Thanks guys.

I am astonished, stunned, by the price that RL has in US :eek2:

I've been giving sub-Q's to my cat every other day for nearly 11 years, I would have sold one of my kidneys for such prices!
I used to buy 4 500ml bottles each month for about 10-12 euro, also 60ml syringes and needles for 25 euro. It was a monthly expense of less than 40 euro. And all without prescription.
I could have spent a little less by purchasing online, but I liked the idea to share my experiences and thoughts with the doctors at the local pharmacy who were very attached to the story of my cat.

Is there a reason why the same thing is so expensive in your country?

Hi yokitty !

This section of 'The Oracle' (of all things CKD) should help: Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease - Obtaining Cheap Supplies USA

Did you know that the woman who authored that site also sponsors an online specialized CKD support community? That's here: Tanya's Feline CKD Support Group You can find out how it works here: Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease - Tanya's Support Group

Hope that helps !
Thanks! That's been my go-to place for knowledge on this whole ordeal. I will definitely join the support group, too.

My local Costco doesn't sell them. I have no idea why not.

Thanks, but Facebook scares me, hehe.

I believe you might be able to order online from the Costco pharmacy. Your vet may need to fax a prescription to them.

I wonder if they would offer the courtesy of ordering some for you.....?
The lady seemed quite emphatic that they didn't sell the stuff, but maybe she just didn't know?

I'm not a member yet though. I wonder if they'd tell me before I commit to a membership?

~ You do not have to be a Costco member to use the pharmacy or optometrists.
I have several bags unused but they must be 5 years old by now . Are they safe to use ? I wonder ...

I got this link from the Facebook group. You can search and it shows prices for lactated ringers in your area
Drug Pricing, or how to get drugs for affordable price
Holy crud, that site says my local Walmart has a carton of 12 for $24. Why on earth couldn't the pharmacist find it? Time for another trip I guess. Thanks!

Oh, is that right? They wouldn't even let me go into the store without an escort, haha.

In my experience, just because that website shows a good lactated ringers price doesn't mean the pharmacy will have it in stock. At my local pharmacy, lactated ringers shows up in their system, but there is some kind of restriction and they can't order it (even with a prescription). I think it's my location - I'm in NYC. Others in the facebook group have been able to get the cases at their pharmacies. Though I think they have to order it each time. They don't just have cases of it on hand.

We just get our lactated ringers from the vet. It's more money, but I don't have a car so I can't really run around the city trying to find cases (if they even exist). The cab to get home would cost more than I'd save.

I think Walmart said they could order it, but that it was super expensive. (I could be misremembering, since I've been to so many different pharmacies these last two weeks).

I've always just gotten mine at the vet's office. It's not expensive and they always seem to have it on hand.

Well, I tried presenting that coupon at Walmart. The lady there refused to honor it, since it was for a pet.

Then I went to another pharmacy on the list, who told me it was out of stock. Then I headed to Walgreens, which had originally quoted me $70 a case, but there was a different pharmacist there today who lied through her teeth and told me they don't sell hospital supplies. :frustrated:

Finally CVS took it, but it was about $45 bucks a case. It's much much better than twelve bucks a bag, but I think I'll keep trying a different Walmarts. I'm pretty sure that first lady was blowing smoke.

ANYWAY. Thank you all for bearing with me through a supremely frustrating experience.

Unfortunately the brand my vet sells doesn't have the markings for measurement, and I'm not good at eyeballing it.

Oh, that stinks! I wouldn't be able to eyeball it either. The ones I get from my vet are marked.
Yeah, I think it's for a horse or some other large animal that would take the whole bag at once.
