My mother in law brought a asiatic lily plant over earlier while I was in the shower getting ready to go out to dinner. When we got home I noticed the flowers in the garage. My husband said his mom got them for me and he had to put them in the garage after he caught our cat Ducky take a bite out of it. I don't know what to do and freaking out. I have no way to get to a vet until 8 am.

If ti was only a bite or two you should be OK. Just watch Dicky carefully fro any vomiting, sleepyness, or tremors. If these occur you might try to call the vet any way(many have answering services 24 hours) or look for an ER vet. Please let us know how Ducky does! I'll pray for him.

Vomiting would be a good thing for Ducky to do. Could you phone a vet and ask for advice on whether you should induce vomiting or not? You need to keep Ducky hydrated to support his kidney. Is he drinking water? Squirt some water into his mouth. My thoughts are with you. x

If you're in the US, call the ASPCA Poison Control hotline: (888) 426-4435 There is an initial consultation fee you have to pay.

Call the vet office and see if the after hours message has a phone number you can call for emergencies or other instructions on emergencies.

I hope he's OK! Sounds like he only ate a small piece, and hopefully vomited it all up. Let us kow how he does at the vet.

I couldnt afford what they recommended which was to keep him all day, give him iv fluids and then at the end of the day possibly transfer him to a nearby veterinary emergency care center called Sage.

He got sub q fluids, antibiotic and anti nausea shot and also a pill to give him later to protect/coat his stomach. Now it's just waiting.

If the vet wanted you to keep him there with an IV, did they at least show you how to give sub-q fluids every few hours? This could flush his kidneys and help him a lot. If not, and he were mine, I would syringe at least 3-5cc's of filtered water in his mouth every 2 hours. Just be careful to do it slowly and not aspirate him.

I agree, Your cat, while sitting in your kitchen, looks like he is in pain.
He seems to needs more Veterinary care. He needs to be watched for any complications and have sub-q fluids in addition to the medication.
I cannot tell you how important this is. His kidneys have to be flushed from the toxic poison in the lilies..

Could you make some kind of a payment plan with your Vet or the Vet Hospital?? this is really serious..

His position looks like a meatloaf... meaning pain...

sorry if I sound harsh, but I only want the best for your baby. It is scary and frightening.

Giving sub-q's is really easy. I was afraid to do it at first, but then calmed down. I can do it so easily... If I lived closer, I would help you.. but alas....

sorry you are going through this...

Honeybee on my lap, music playing in background
in the meantime see if he will drink water out of a syringe..you will need to keep getting fluids into him but slow and steady to not aspirate. He may need something for pain as well. I would phone your vet and tell them he's in pain. I hope he will be ok.

With Parvo, they mix the medication in with the sub-q. If you can't afford the IV, then maybe you can afford just the medication and have your vet show you how. The skin on a cat is thick, and you really have to push to get the needle in, but other than that, it is real easy to do.

They gave him the sub q fluids at the vet. And Im aware the best thing would be to keep him at the vet. But also the vet said he didn't know too much about lilys, He took pictures of the actual flower I brought in with me and was going to send it to the emergency specialist at Sage.

If he hasn't improved by this evening I do plan on taking him to Sage. I do have to wait until husband gets paid and home from work.

Im unable to get care credit and payment plan wasnt an option but they agreed to let me pay the remaining $40 I owe later today.
I'm doing everything I possibly can for my cat. I don't want to lose him.

Interesting how the vet said he doesn't know much about lillies. That is one of the main toxins that they need to be aware. Eating even just a portion of a leaf can shut down the kidneys. They need to be continually flushed iv. It's also strange that the vet gave an anti nausea as the vomiting is an important part of getting rid of the toxin. I guess he figured the toxin was past the stomache and already in the system. The standard protocol should be flushing the kidneys and administering activated charcoal to absorb any left over toxin. Sub q fluids are absorbed very slowly over a long period of time. They are not going to flush the kidneys, at most they will keep your cat hydrated. Also the antibiotic is not going to do anything for the poison, it will jut protect the gut from obtaining a bacterial infection after all the vomiting. Please keep a close eye on your cat and keep us updated. And please consider returning to the vet for more aggressive treatment.

Can you go to the grocery store and get a jar (or a few) of human meat baby food. The chicken or turkey are usually the best. You don't want any garlic or onion I think it is gerber stage 2 that is the most basic. It has a high water content and if he will eat it it could help keep him hydrated.

I know you are doing all you can. Making sure he is getting the liquids right now is very important. While he got fluids at the vet he needs more to fully flush his system. That is why people were saying to see if the vet will show you how to do subQ at home or syringe him some water at home.
