In October 2018, my cat Lovey who'd just turned 14 started peeing on the bathroom rugs. Then on the futon in the living room. I took him in for a check-up and it's cancer. Managed it with chemotherapy and pain meds. He stopped peeing. I had to have a large open kitty litter and clean it daily.
He started peeing again. The cancer came back. More chemo.
He stopped. Supposedly cancer free these past few months. Acting completely normal, running, jumping, playing, eating.

A couple of weeks ago I woke up and he'd peed on my bed. Two big spots in different places. Never peed on my bed before. Only the futon. I increased his pain meds to twice a day and two of them after talking to the oncologist.

He stopped and seemed happy. A week later he randomly broke his hind leg. No fall, no crash. Indoor cat, just suddenly crying and can't use the leg. I rushed him to the ER. Compound fracture. They did a bone biopsy and sent him home.
He doesn't eat so I bring him back three days later after trying to get appointments with the pain clinic and oncologist.
This time they rush the tests I've been asking for. Cancer everywhere and severe heart disease. His other hind leg could also break.
He's home eating, drinking, purring and demanding tons of hugs and giving me love bites. He's on heart meds and pain meds. I called one hospice vet today but will call the one I used in the past tomorrow when she's back in town.
I'm so mad that he's had no chemo for months and the oncologist was telling me he was fine because his blood work showed no evidence of cancer. Never once did they do any x rays, CT scans or ultrasounds to stage the cancer and see if it was anywhere else besides his blood. I even asked them to and they said they didn't need to.
Humans who get cancer get PET scans all over their bodies to detect cancer anywhere to determine what stage it is to determine treatments. They don't have that for animals but should at least see where the cancer is.

I did the right thing bringing him home though. We've had tons of hugs and love bites. My other cat has been washing him and cuddling with him non-stop and my dog has been hovering and went crazy when he saw him.
I want a miracle so he can magically be healthy again. The pain meds made him act normal and I don't want let him go. Ever.

He's my sixth cat to get cancer since 2015. I lost two more beloved cats from my childhood and youth two months apart before I got him in 2005. Another one in 2006

My poor Ruby will be an only cat. He's used to having lots of other cats and will be devastated. He hates dogs but loves my dog.
I'll have to get him a kitten at some point so he doesn't die of grief. He hates being alone.

But I don't ever want another cat again.

Oh my heaven's, I am so incredibly sorry!!!

Keep music on, --the app Relax My Cat, and chamomile tea with honey for you. Also there's holy basil for the stress, and L-tryptophan to help with tension, and there is a homeopathic remedy Ignatia Amara under the tongue for grief and shock, all natural remedies.

I'm asking with all the gentle love I have,
you mentioned hospice, --will you have a way for Ruby and your dog to know, at the end?

There's a vet I used in the past who comes out to the home and provides comfort and hospice type of palliative medications and examines the pets and gives you guidelines on how to tell when it's close to the end and when it's best to euthanize. She also does the euthanasia at home.

There's another practice that does this as well but they're very expensive and it's all consults which the pet insurance doesn't cover. I'll use them if I have to.

There's still another vet who just comes out and euthanizes at home. Ruby and my dog can be with him and I can be holding him.

The vet hospital oncologist referred us to the palliative care specialist and we were supposed to have an appointment tomorrow. I don't want to take him but want to talk to the specialist on the phone tomorrow and go from there. Unless something changes before.
But I plan to keep him at home with Ruby and my dog and stay with him except for dog park trips.
I want a miracle cure for all his problems.
Has anyone else been through anything like this?
I've never had a cat with late stage heart disease so I'm afraid he'll have sudden pain. I'm giving him two heart meds every twelve hours. Plus a lot of pain meds
I've never had a pet with heart issues so know nothing about it.

Every cat is special and unique but he's truly like no other cat I've ever had. Clingy, demanding, on my face all the time, can't stand for me to even roll over and have my back to him, climbs over me to face him. Loves everyone, climbs all over visitors around neck and shoulders and will ride around on my shoulder like a big heavy furry baby all day while I do things. Purrs and drools when petted. Love bites hurt. Even love bites the big dog who jumps and runs away.
Throws food everywhere and won't leave it in the bowl. Digs his water bowl, wants his own special water bowl. I never did get him a fountain :(
Runs yo the kitty litter whenever I change it, watches to supervise my work, then used it so I can clean it again. Velcro cat for 14 years. Eats hair, fuzzy things, string, my phone charger, cords, anything he shouldn't. Mouthy loves to chew on things. Softest fur ever, sheds everywhere. Baby fur to match the world's clingiest cat.
Life will be empty without his constant neediness and demanding aggressive love. He's not a normal cat.

Thank you. And thanks for the link. And the candle. My mom used to light candles in church. I'm a big believer in the power of prayer.
I've had cats live to be 19 and 20. Since those two, none made it past 14-16. Despite getting more expensive food and more vet care.
I was really hoping he'd beat that since he's always been thin and active.

inkysmom inkysmom ,
I'm terribly sorry for what you and Lovey are going through... I feel your desperation as it was mine. Poor little soul, he doesn't understand what's going on. This thing has always got me.

It's a real shame that the vets didn't follow up Lovey's case more thoroughly, they are often so shallow, like our pets are just objects, not living creatures that fill our lives with love.

Yes, I've been through this before, with my sweet Lola.
And I prayed a lot, I did things that probably I wouldn't do for myself. I also tried alternative, non conventional, therapies, without telling the vets of course, because they wouldn't have understood/believed.
I also asked who's in charge on the other side of this life if I could trade some years of mine to save my kitty.
I made promises that if she had healed I would have changed my life and renounced things...

But as you can imagine, nothing of the above worked. Despite my energy, devotion, prayers, my Lola left me two years ago.

My life hasn't been the same since, it's all so meaningless.
I will pray for your Lovey, though, maybe this time it'll work.

Kiss him for me!

Thank you Antonio65! Lovey came out from under the table and popped up on to the bed when I started reading your comment, so maybe he was waiting for his extra kiss lol .
I remember you posting about losing your beautiful cats about the same time I lost my beloved Inky almost two years ago.
I can't believe you don't have another cat or two or three by now . You're such a loving, devoted, knowledgeable owner with so much to give a loving cat or two. It's sad not to give your devoted cat owner talents, patience and generosity to the right homeless cat or two who needs a home.
I mean no disrespect or pushiness at all so please don't be offended. Thank you for your sincere comment And all the best to you!
I really need to try to get over my anger at the incompetent vets who told me clearly now that multiple myeloma shows up in bones but says, despite this, they don't routinely scan to stage for levels of cancer in pets. It's apparently a bone cancer which I'm told about six months AFTER his diagnosis. Until this week I was told it was a blood cancer like leukemia. WTF???!!! Which is it???!!!
And I have very good pet insurance, why wasn't he tested when I requested it???!!
Humans are. I asked several times!!!
