Danone formula -
A batch of KetoCal 3:1 was positive for Cronobacter spp. during testing at the border by customs officials. There have been no illnesses linked to the product, and the source of contamination is being investigated by the company.
The implicated formula is a specialist product not sold to the general public but available under prescription for children with special nutritional needs.
Affected tins are batch number 101101598 with best before July 8, 2023. For many patients there is no alternative feeding option so Nutricia has provided advice to consumers on how to make the product safe.
Nutricia, which is owned by Danone, recommends preparing the affected batch of KetoCal 3:1 by replacing cool water with water at a temperature of 80 degrees C (176 degrees F).

Africa - Uganda - update - solution -

Researchers have provided more details about an outbreak traced to contaminated food aid in Uganda in 2019 that killed five people.
It was the largest documented outbreak caused by food contamination with tropane alkaloids, according to the study published in the journal BMC Public Health.
Jimsonweed, also known as Datura stramonium, contains toxic alkaloids that cause gastrointestinal and central nervous system symptoms when ingested and can be lethal at high doses. The plant may grow together with certain crops and mix with them during harvesting. In March 2019, more than 200 patients were admitted to multiple health centers for acute gastrointestinal and neurologic symptoms.

Europe -
Two audits by the European Commission’s health and safety unit have looked at checks to ensure fish product safety in Egypt and Croatia.
A remote DG Sante audit, in May and June 2021 in Egypt, identified shortcomings in virtually all areas and made 20 recommendations.

US -Wayne Farms LLC of Decatur, AL, has expanded its nationwide recall of ready-to-eat chicken breast fillets because they may be undercooked, which can result in the growth of foodborne pathogens.

The CDC and other public health agencies are investigating a cluster of hepatitis illnesses among children in 25 states. The outbreak is thought to be part of an international situation that has seen more than 200 children sickened. The outbreak stretches across 25 states from all regions of the United States from Florida to Washington and from Minnesota to Alabama. In the United States there have been 109 patients identified since October 2021. A specific cause has not been identified and Butler stressed that the numbers of sick children are not out of line with an average year. The deputy director did not say whether the source could be food borne, but it is doubtful.

What to watch for:

China - an item that proves construction can cause serious problems and that we should always be alert to changes in the smell and appearance of water supplies wherever we live Though not a matter of construciton, look at how long it's taken for the investigation to answer the Lucky Charms question post #452 above.

A waterborne typhoid fever outbreak sickened more than 20 people in China earlier this year.
The outbreak involved 23 patients in an apartment in Changping District in Beijing and was caused by extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Salmonella Typhi through a polluted water supply.
