Following A Member, What Does It Mean?

Hi all,
I've been wondering for a while about this "follow a user" feature in the site.
What does it exactly mean? I've been followed by 7 members and I follow 3 members.
Could you please explain this to me? Thanks!

If you "follow" a member and have alerts turned on, you'll get an alert any time that member creates new content, i.e., starts a thread or posts in an existing one.

Oh... so I haven't turned any alert on for them, because I have never received any notifications for their activities.

EDIT: I have checked, but... where do I find the option to set an alert for a followed member?

Sorry -I thought we had that setting, but apparently not. That's how it's supposed to work, but apparently it hasn't been set up on this site.

it seems, though, that some members have this feature active because I have notifications of people liking or replying my posts as soon as I post them, so clearly someone is actively following me.

That's due to your alert settings, which probably look something like this:

Click on your username at the red bar next to the envelope, then click on ‘Your Profile Page’. On the left column of Your Profile Page under your profile photo, there’s two section that shows who you follow and who’s following you.

It’ll also show up on the main page under the tab ‘Members Online Now’

Yes, tabbytom , I know who I am following and who is following me.
What I don't know is what I have to expect from this feature. If I am to be notified anytime one of the members I follow opens a new thread or writes a new post, then this is not happening

It should appear in the notification icon next to the envelope on the red tab.

I don't think the feature is working. There's been some tweaking going on in the background, so maybe that's why.

I only get notification for purraises and new replies in threads that I am following.
No notifications for new posts or threads from people I follow.

Thank you I did see these. I'm looking into ways to bring that feature back. Otherwise will just disable the feature as it's confusing and meaningless. There's a lot going on now in terms of behind-the-scenes site improvements and tweaking so this might take a little bit longer.
