Small update:
Not sure if this means anything or if it’s because of his surgery today:
He is more alert and acting normal. Since we’ve been home he has not yowled nor tried to hump things anymore.
First hour home: He was a bit skittish. He wanted out of that carrier. Upon letting him out he started sniffing around, almost as if he were trying to recognize the place again. And he kept hiding. So I just let him be. He ate a little bit. He also pooped and peed. His urine was VERY strong.

Hour 2: Acted normal. still has not “yowled” nor tried to hump. He still ate in small portions.

Hour 3: No yowling or humping. Still eats in small portions. I laid down and he jumped right up and started rubbing against me and my face… NOTE: when he started his howling and humping, he had also stopped giving me affection. So for him to come out from under the bed to just lay with me and rub against me and sleep on me means a lot 😭😭 he’s currently still sleeping on me with his cute little paws folded in❤

Great update. The strong urine is normal and will continue for awhile.

It was very strong though. I’ve smelled it before, and it’s always had the pungent odor but this time it was a little stronger. I can still smell it for some reason.

It's probably just concentrated from not peeing while at the vet. Plus he is peeing out the drugs.

You can try to distract him but it's normal for him to lick a little bit. Nobel didn't wear a cone or anything either and I don't remember my sister's cat Deizel wearing one (we lived together and they got neutered the same day).

It's normal for males to have very strong smelling urine after neutering. Sometimes when I walk through the door into the rescue the odor almost knocks me over. Usually the older the male, the stronger the smell. It is hormonal and will go away in a week or so. Scoop the litter box as often as you can.

Update

So he started humping stuff again the day after. The howling has minimized, though. He sleeps through the night but He will start screaming around 4:30 am, when before he’d be up all night. I get up at 5 am so it doesn’t really affect my sleep anyway. (I would love those precious 30 mins though).
I really hope the humping stops though.

With life and cats in particular, I've found you have to grab on to better with both hands and keep hoping. It really should improve as the hormones get out of his system. In just a few more weeks you should have your sweet kitty back. Well, your sweet kitty who only thinks of girl cats when there is one who is interested near by. I did have one boy who was forever hopeful of the ladies (who were spayed) despite their making their view clear by shoving him off bookshelves and throwing things at him. Even he gave up in time, a long time. But no howling, so singing.

I agree that it could take additional weeks for his hormones to adjust and psychology to adapt. Give it some more time.

If it doesn't stop in 2-3 weeks with hormones being out of the system, I'm happy to give further ideas that worked with Magnus.

No screaming last night AT ALL. ZERO. He slept ALL NIGHT, and I got to keep my precious 30 min of sleep . He even stayed in his bed after hearing cats fighting outside👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 un-neutered Aslan would have done otherwise.

i guess you (all) are right. I’ll give it more time, I mean he literally JUST got neutered 3 days ago.In my experience, when my female cat was spayed she was still in heat. But the days after that (even the same day she got fixed) she was no longer calling out. So I was expecting the same with Aslan.

Oh my goodness 🤩 so happy for you.

Yes with male cats it takes a few weeks. Magnus we got 2 weeks after his neuter. He was healed but for the first week his zoomies were even zoomier.

It's all dependent on the cat. Some males stop all these behaviors immediately after being neutered. Some can take weeks. It's a genetic lottery.

Awe I love it when they get the zoomies!!! It’s like they’re so happy and content that they run out of pure joy!

Mostly I like it, too. Except when it happens when you work from home, and have a Zoom meeting, and your cat is flying all over the living room behind you and yowling. (I live in an open-design apartment and there's nowhere else for me to put him except in the bedroom, where he will just yowl even louder while locked in there).

Hahaha that would be a perfect time for me to show off that I have a cat!

I'd prefer that to my cat howling during my meetings 😂 (current behaviour)

I think if I was on the other end of a meeting and heard someone’s cat, I’d ask them to show their cat😆
I did that with one-on-one or casual meetings with a few people who I knew really well. But it never failed that his zoomies were zoomiest during company-wide meetings when distractions are embarrassing.
