(Raw wound image warning)
There is a wound on my cat that is confusing me. He is an outside/inside cat so he most likely got this wound from a cat bite. If my memory serves me correctly, it was a scab a couple days ago, but now it’s raw skin. Licking it doesn’t seem to cause him any pain. We can’t take him to the vet, last time we did he freaked out and we almost lost him. Anyone that can help with this? Can it heal on it’s on?

First, he should not be licking at it. Go to the pet store and get a cone to keep him from making it worse.
Clean the wound with some saline, and try a bit of regular Neosporin (not the +) for a couple days. If it does not improve, you may need to take him to the vet after all to get some antibiotics so that it doesn't abscess.

Okay, I was researching and I saw that I should stop him from licking it. Should I try and prevent him from going outside as much until it heals? We have a litter box and such, so the bathroom part wouldn’t be an issue. Thanks for your reply!

Yes, I would recommend keeping him indoors, especially if you get a cone for him... maneuvering around with a cone is tricky enough indoors, I can't even imagine the difficulties outdoors. lol
Keeping him indoors will also allow you to monitor the wound. Measure the wound, and keep track if it gets any bigger. If you can keep the fur around it trimmed back that will help the healing. If it looks to be getting bigger, doesn't scab over, or if the site gets puffy, red, or pussed, get him to a vet. The stress is temporary, compared to an infected wound.

Okay, I will try to get him a cone from the pet store tomorrow. Thank you very much, I realized shortly after replying that wearing a cone outdoors would not be good at all lol.

My lovely cat Joey recently got a bite wound, and today we got him a cone to stop him from licking it, and Well and Good cat wound spray. It said it gets rid of the germs that cause infections, but I’m sure not sure, should we buy some kind of antibiotic cream?

What bit your cat and where is the wound? Cat bites can be tricky even to other cats. If it were my cat, he would be seen by the vet.

We’re trying to make the vet a bit of a last resort. Last time we tried he escaped and we almost lost him. We’re not sure what he was bit by, he goes outside a lot and is a fairly big cat. He’s also pretty territorial and there’s other outdoor cats around here, so we’re leaning towards that. The bite is on his lower back near the base of his tail on his right side.

None of us are qualified to tell you how to treat your cat and the problem. You have done the right thing to get the cone if you are going to put medicines or antibiotic creams on your cat..
I’ll try to call the vet tomorrow and see what they think. Thank you for the help though!

I posted a link in my previous reply about a cat being bitten by another cat. You might go back and read that and do some more searching around. It is possible there are some other threads here where members posted what they did to treat their cats.

Oh it didn’t show up when it loaded before! Thank you, I’ll take a look at it!

Does anyone have any idea on how to clean fur off a wound? It’s not very raw, and the bits of fur are stuck to it? Would this cause an issue? We can’t go to the vet so I have to figure out how to do this.

This looks like it could be a puncture wound so I am worried you can not get to a vet. Puncture wounds can develop infections deep down and you may not be aware of this until your cat is very sick and in a lot of pain.
Generally in terms of cleaning an area I would only use a little warm, salt water to dab at the area but take care as your cat may not take kindly to you touching anywhere near the wound.

Mix a teaspoon of salt in a bowl of tepid water, soak cotton wool in it, then gently wipe the area clean.

It looks like a puncture wound. Do you have another cat or has your cat been outside? It might be from a cat bite. Is there another wound above it? If there were two wounds then I'd definitely say that it was a bite. You really should try to take your cat to a vet asap as it might get/be infected (if it were from a bite the likelihood of this multiplies).

If you really can't get to a vet any time soon and it starts to look angry, maybe think about spreading some honey on it, as it is a natural antibiotic.

What's he/she called?

:alright:

Sorry for the late reply to you both! Went hiking on this unusually warm day haha. Yea we’ve determined it’s most likely a cat bite. He goes outside when he pleases(we have a cat door) and is very territorial. He is neutered though. We can’t take him to the vet as he freaks out and breaks out of his carrier. Oops sorry I didn’t mean to post that I didn’t finish it haha. Anyways, when we took him to get his shots a little more than a year ago, he escaped and we lost him for a few days. And my dad got scratched up a lot on his hand. I’ll try to use warm salt water. Sorry if this sounds naive, but what kind of salt? I could possibly try honey, I’ve seen that you can use neosporin. He is name is Joey! Kind of a funny name haha, we weren’t the ones to name him though. ^^

if you use neosporin-hold him for 5 minutes after apply then wipe off excess after the 5 minutes has passed.. Don't let your kitty lick it. Don't cover it either-probably best to keep it open. you can carefully trim fur around it but use blunt end scissors otherwise another puncture wound will just complicate things. Do NOT use neosporin with pain medication in it-that chemical isn't safe for our babies if that's what I remember reading...can you call your vet and ask for help over the telephone?

The local vet is closed but I can try calling them tomorrow. We’ve already trimmed around the edges of his wound but we can trim more if needed. Not licking it won’t be an issue, he’s coned at the moment. What type would you recommend?
