Today was the press preview for the orchid show at the New York Botanical Garden. Usually we get chits for lunch at their Pine Tree Cafe. Today they're trying something new.
There were a couple of serving tables on the plaza in front of the conservatory. We're supposed to arrive at 10:00 a.m. I was late - yesterday's snow had been cleared from the highways but the idiot drivers were out in full force. A one point there was an 8 car fender bender that closed 2 lanes of the 3 lane highway, which caused a 10 mile tail back. Get past that, drive on, and then all cars were shunted to the lower level of the George Washington Bridge due to "an incident ahead" which I later found out was due to ice falling on the upper bridge deck. It's an 85 mile drive for me. Today it took noticeably longer that the typical 2 hours.
First off, there was an urn with infused water, and a couple of coffee urns. I homed in on the coffee - Coffee, I needed coffee!
The food offerings included nice airy, crumbly muffins (cut in half), nice thick slices of a pumpkin bread (texture like the muffins), a bowl of help yourself to fruit with cubes of honeydew melon, slices of oranges (peel removed, thank you very much), blueberries and raspberries. But the very best were the empanadas. There were two different kinds but I sort of homed in on the ones filled with avocado, egg, and potato. It was excellent, especially with the squirt of mayo and sriracha sauce.
And oh yes, the orchid show is wonderful. Plus the drive home much easier. I even got to stop at the supermarket where, among other things, I bought chicken gizzards for Mr Poe. He has one, raw, every evening with his dinner. It keeps his gums in good condition. I'd offer them to Domino but he is not interested.
So what did you have for lunch?
