Today was the press preview for the orchid show at the New York Botanical Garden. Usually we get chits for lunch at their Pine Tree Cafe. Today they're trying something new.

There were a couple of serving tables on the plaza in front of the conservatory. We're supposed to arrive at 10:00 a.m. I was late - yesterday's snow had been cleared from the highways but the idiot drivers were out in full force. A one point there was an 8 car fender bender that closed 2 lanes of the 3 lane highway, which caused a 10 mile tail back. Get past that, drive on, and then all cars were shunted to the lower level of the George Washington Bridge due to "an incident ahead" which I later found out was due to ice falling on the upper bridge deck. It's an 85 mile drive for me. Today it took noticeably longer that the typical 2 hours.

First off, there was an urn with infused water, and a couple of coffee urns. I homed in on the coffee - Coffee, I needed coffee!

The food offerings included nice airy, crumbly muffins (cut in half), nice thick slices of a pumpkin bread (texture like the muffins), a bowl of help yourself to fruit with cubes of honeydew melon, slices of oranges (peel removed, thank you very much), blueberries and raspberries. But the very best were the empanadas. There were two different kinds but I sort of homed in on the ones filled with avocado, egg, and potato. It was excellent, especially with the squirt of mayo and sriracha sauce.

And oh yes, the orchid show is wonderful. Plus the drive home much easier. I even got to stop at the supermarket where, among other things, I bought chicken gizzards for Mr Poe. He has one, raw, every evening with his dinner. It keeps his gums in good condition. I'd offer them to Domino but he is not interested.

So what did you have for lunch?

It was a quick lunch today - almond milk yogurt with granola, a banana and half of a peanut butter and raspberry preserves sandwich.

Bread is important. Furballsmom Furballsmom and neely neely , what kind of bread did you use for your sandwiches?

Trying to remember, did I mention somewhere else that shredded raw carrot and raisins on peanut butter sandwiches is quite good. Travels well for a brown bag lunch too.

Frozen food - yes, we eat it too (mainly himself does, when I'm away) - I think chicken and fish are nicer than the beef. Lean Cuisine does a tortilla crusted fish (tilapia) that's good and microwaves quickly.

There is an incredibly easy recipe for baking your own bread. It takes about 20 hours with no kneading, no attention, because you use just a tiny amount of yeast and give it a long slow rise. Lovely crust, excellent crumb, and great oven spring.
Bread Sliced.jpg
3 cups bread flour, 1 5/8 cup warm water, 1/4 teaspoon yeast, salt. Stir together (it's a very wet, slack dough.) Leave in bowl, covered with plastic wrap, for at least 12 or up to 18 hours. For example start at 4:00 p.m. and bake early the next afternoon. Need an heavy enamel cast iron pot with a lid that can take 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Just Google no-knead bread for details.

Today's lunch - but let me back up. When I took the mail down to put in the mailbox for pickup I detoured into the woodland garden to see what might be happening. A later season than last year but the first winter aconites are up through the flattened autumn leaves and showing color. I need to get into the woods and start picking up sticks - all the branches that came down in the winter storms. But also need to be working on the web site entry for yesterday's orchid show. And complete the book review (A Taste for Herbs by Sue Goertz) that also needs to upload when done. So lunch should be simple.

Mr Poe (in my lap, even as I type this) and Domino each got their half a 3 oz can of FF. Happens four times a day. Check.

Himself got frozen Mexican type thingies heated in the toaster oven. Jose Ole brand mini-tacos. Good. DeliMex brand mini taquitos (couldn't find the Jose Ole brand in Wal-Mart which is where I happened to be) - not good. More wrapper than filling. Trying to decide if I will pitch the rest in the trash. A couple of large cherry tomatoes. Seedless grapes for dessert. Check.

I toasted a roll. Filled it with smoked turkey and Jarlsburg from the deli, shredded lettuce, sliced black olives. Mayo and grainy mustard. Sloppy to eat, but tasty. Honeycrisp apple to finish my lunch. Check.

See, nothing worth photographing here. Now to dispossess the cat and get outside. Web work can be done after dark. And I really don't like gardening with a head lamp.

I had a grilled avocado, tomato and mozzarella cheese sandwich on whole wheat, plus a few grapes for dessert.

Hmmm... interesting. I've put freshly sliced strawberries on a peanut butter sandwich before. As well as chocolate chips. :yummy:

That bread sounds interesting too. Another easy one is https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-bread-in-the-slow-cooker-192421

I had a PB&J, but that was just the intro to the really important part of my lunch: a brownie in a mug! It took less than 10 minutes to make, and that included getting out the ingredients, measuring into the mug, mixing, and microwaving for 90 seconds. Voilà! Instant brownie!

Yep. It was this one: Brownie in a Mug

I tried the pre-packaged Ghirardelli brownies in a mug mixes (found them at Costco) but was not impressed. And recently, a magazine insert in the newspaper had a chocolate cake in a mug which was poor. But this one was surprisingly good, and it has ingredients I always have on hand (which could be a bad thing :)). It made a big brownie, and I shared with The Spouse. A quick and easy chocolate fix!

I'm so going to make that soon. Maybe even tomorrow.

I also always have those ingredients on hand, which definitely may be a bad thing. :yummy:
I know, right? It’s hard to resist something like this when it’s so quick and easy. Let me know what you think.

Next time I may drizzle some caramel on top. :)
