On Sunday, I watched the third part of an excellent series aired on PBS entitled, "1916: The Easter Rebellion" and was transfixed by the main theme, as I was the first time I watched the documentary. It is the most beautiful song I have ever heard, deeply symbolic, as are most Irish songs. After researching the translated lyrics (it is sung in Irish, which language I do not understand), it became even more meaningful. My European ancestors were Irish and I have studied the history for a long time. The words are from a poem by one of the martyrs of the Rising, Padraig Pearse:
