Next week my 12 year old cat Pipo is getting his some of his teeth removed and I am very worried.

This is very difficult for me to talk about....2 years ago my Buggy Boo went in for dental work. He came out of anesthesia and seemed fine at first, but then went into respiratory distress and died. It was extremely traumatic for me, and even now, I can barely type these words. I have had many cats over the years, and loved them all, but Buggy Boo was very special. I don't know if any of you who have had many cats that you loved, but had one that stood out from the rest, but that was Buggy Boo.

I know Pipo absolutely needs his teeth taken care of, but I'm so afraid. Is there anyone who has had dental work done on your cat? How can I make this easier on Pipo? Is there any advice or encouragement you can give me?

Hi!
I have had my boy in for cleanings as well as a resorptive lesion and a couple pulled teeth. He is on my lap as I'm writing this.

Does your kitty get stressed going to the vet? Is so, talk to the vet about calming products, and also find out if they'll be giving you pain meds for after for him, how to give them- is he easy to pill? If not talk to them about that.

For you, try some chamomile tea with honey or holy basil for your stress. Your baby will pick up on your emotions.

Hang in there, :vibes::heartshape:

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience and loss with Buggy Boo. :hugs: I can also relate since our last cat, Neely, who we also adopted had dental surgery for FORL twice. The first time everything was fine then several years later she needed it again and unfortunately was diagnosed with cancer of the mandible. Fast forward, our present cat also has FORL and needed dental surgery after we adopted him several years ago. He has to go back for more dental work soon and I share the same exact feelings as you. I did not intend to go on and on about my cats but just wanted you to know I understand what you're going through.

If it helps please keep in mind that Pipo is a different cat than Boo and hopefully he will not have the same problem(s) as Boo. At least that's what I keep telling myself about our boy too. :wink: One thing I think that helps is if the vet who is doing the dental surgery is a veterinary dental specialist. It can give you peace of mind to know that your kitty is getting the very best of care. Of course they can't reverse genetics but you can discuss with them what to do before as well as after his surgery. I will definitely be doing the same thing and will keep Pipo and you in my thoughts next week. :vibes::vibes::vibes:

It's a shame when the small percentage of risks actually happens to you, and I'm sorry you lost your Buggy Boo. It is heartbreaking to think that it would happen again, but mostly unlikely.

Amalie has had dental surgery I think 4 times now because of her Forls. She might have five teeth left. Be sure to comb your estimate for "Nerve Block" because they'll numb the quadrant and should use less anesthesia that way.

Ask for the long last buprenorphine shot (Buprenorphine SR). I opted for the shorter acting one and now my Krista is too angry to come home. Probably because her shorter acting shot wore off.

Aside from that, she’s had five dentals already. Resorptive lesions. :(. It’s only the last two where I thought I would pick up the pain relief schedule at home that it seems the shorter acting shot is not strong enough.

i understand completely, you are not alone. In had to take my 12 year old in too, and was stressed out to the max. He had a heart condition. He came through fine. As long as your vet knows your cat and what kind of shape they are in,they should be prepared for any inforeseen conditions. In my case, my vet elected to put him under a lighter amesthesia, and he came through fine. You might enquire about that. Boo may have had an unknown heart defect, you had no way of knowing. I'llpray for you both!

Just wanted everyone to know that Pipo had his dental work 2 days ago, and had 6 teeth removed. He is doing very well. He is eating, playing and resting comfortably.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support.

That's wonderful news and I'm glad to hear Pipo's recovery went well. Give him an extra hug from all of us. :grouphug:
