It has been TWO YEARS since I have updated Perla's thread!!! Still dealing with her weepy eye and at times conjunctiva inflammation. Added in Lactoferrin about 7 months back along with the Lysine. Much improvement was seen after the introduction of the Lactoferrin. Laurie ldg ldg brought this to our attention via this thread :hugs: :bigthumb: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/267703/stubborn-herpes-infection-add-lactoferrin-in-addition-to-lysine

July 4 - Perla had a very, very serious flare in BOTH eyes. Never before has her right eye been infected. It has always been the left. Extremely inflamed conjunctiva in both eyes with greenish drainage. No other symptoms. Took her to her eye specialist on Tuesday this week, Dr. Denise Lindley. She recommended at this point running the Upper Respiratory panel http://www.zoologix.com/dogcat/Datasheets/FelineRespiratoryPanel.htm Since this has been a chronic issue for a few years with no good response to herpes treatments, she wants to look at other diseases.

The results came back today. Perla was negative for Herpes BUT that does not mean she is not a carrier of the virus as 80% or more of cats have the herpes infection lurking according to the vet. Perla was positive for both Chlamydia and Mycoplasma........ I can't believe that we waited this long to run this test. I feel bad for her but now we can treat her accordingly. She will be on Doxycycline for a month and this should help tremendously to cure her - hopefully. Not saying this will surely fix her eye issues BUT should help so very much. :cross:

NOW - I am thinking that Wendall - who has been diagnosed with asthma - may really NOT have asthma. He could very well have Mycoplasma. I have to do more research and talk with my regular vet whom Wendall will be seeing shortly for his yearly lung xray about this finding. Since Perla was positive then others could be positive or carriers. Argh. I wish I could afford to get them all tested - the other five because now I am wondering. Actually the only ones who show any off symptoms are Perla, Pipsqueak and Wendall. So I may just get Wendall and Pip tested. I honestly am hoping that this will be the answer for Wendall's chronic bronchial cough and lung changes. Would be easier to treat Mycoplasma than asthma, I would think.

Will report back as the month goes on to update on how the :princess: is doing. :D :wavey:

Thanks for the update. It must be a relief to finally have a diagnosis.
Yes, would be easier to treat a bacteria than asthma.
Good luck.

Real bad morning. I am trying hard to keep it together. Wendall's right eyelid is extremely swollen. It was slightly yesterday and I thought it was a bug bite of some sort but overnight, hugely inflamed. A bit of gunk in the corner of the eye too. Lots of coughing too. He has his own thread too regarding the asthma but I am thinking after all of this time that Wendall has Mycoplasma. His blood work back in 2012 showed very, very slight anemia. My other vet never thought much about it but Mycoplasma causes anemia. :bawling: Then Pipsqueak has major diarrhea this morning. Pip has his own thread to on FIC :lol2: BUT now I am thinking he has the virus too because Mycoplasma can cause blood in urine. On top of my old dog, Henry, and his coughing from heart trouble, I feel like I am running an infirmary.

I am on my way to the vet with Wendall and will ask for the UR panel to be run on him. No time to see Pip today, but will get him in on Monday. I am feeling Perla, Wendall and Pip all need the Doxy for a month and am feeling they are positive for Mycoplasma. Yes - I am freaking BUT dealing. What else can I do, right?! :lol3: I guess the good news is that I may have ONE answer to my three sickies after all. Somehow, I don't think it will be that simple, though.

It is pouring rain this morning. Perfect - because it is "pouring rain" inside this house too.

Mycoplasma and chlamydia are what my little Bluebelle finally tested positive for, after 6 months of trying all sorts of things to clear her eyes. She was on doxycycline for a month as gel, with another oral antibiotic. Her eyes finally cleared but 3 weeks later the infection came back, and this time Amber has it too - overnight he developed crusts and weeping. So now they are both isolated and on the meds again for another month. These two bacteria are the very devil to get rid of. The eyes seem to clear within a couple of days of the meds but the infection is obviously still there even after a long time. But like you, I was relieved that at least I knew what we were dealing with. Bluebelle also tested negative for herpes, though I tried l-lysine anyway to boost her immunity.

What a run of things you have going on there.
I guess if you have a correct diagnosis you have the potential for cure / improvement so hang in there and continue to support your fur family through this.  Massive vibes for antibiotics to work well and resolve these symptoms so all affected cats get better and feel more comfortable.

Mycoplasma and chlamydia are what my little Bluebelle finally tested positive for, after 6 months of trying all sorts of things to clear her eyes..
We have been trying things for more than two years and I wonder why my other vet never suggested the UR panel for her. Watery, inflamed conjunctive doesn't always mean Herpes as I thought before. I am really sad that it has taken this long to find out what was truly the issue. I have learned something very important this week from Dr. Lindley. Unfortunately, it took this serious of a flare up from Perla to get me to take her back to the specialist and not her regular vet. :shame: I had no clue there was any other option other than it being herpes.

Perla is SO much better today. Her eyes are about 50% better and she is definitely feeling better too. There was no medication for me to put in her eyes, only the oral antibiotic. After all this time, putting meds in her eyes has not helped one bit and I am hopeful that the oral med will knock this out. Her eye is not as weepy either !! :bigthumb:

Wendall had the UR Panel yesterday and a lung xray. His lungs are much more cloudy this year than last. IF he tests positive for Mycoplasma, then I have an answer as to his phlegmy and raspy cough that he has been suffering with the past two years. Why, again, was this not suggested in the past with Wendall and three other vets that HE has seen - the UR panel?? Could this really be the answer to his lung issues? He has always been a more lazy cat too, taking more naps than the other cats, and not interested in playing much other than watching and I chalked it up to just being him. IF he tests positive, therein possibly lies the answer as well. My poor babies.

Pip (who will get the UR panel this week) has also started the antibiotic - Minocycline for one month which is in the same family as Doxy and apparently, according to Dr. Molly, is replacing Doxy which is getting harder and more expensive to get. Perla got her Doxy from the pharmacy and the capsules are big. I roll the capsule in butter, and then syringe a little water after pilling the cats with the capsules. So far so good and the capsules seems to be going down and not irritating their throats. :cross:

Wendall's left eyelid is still swollen today and the right eye is still weepy. I am confident that the medication will do it's job and he will feel better in a day or two. :cross:

Thanks, everyone, for your vibes and concern. It means so much to ALL of us here - :rub: :heart3:

I can understand your frustration. I was so angry that it took 4 months for someone to suggest a biopsy on the eye and a lab culture. By that time the infection was so deep seated that it is almost impossible to get rid of. I am just hoping that I have caught Amber in time for it to be treated successfully within a reasonable time scale.

You know, Laurie, I actually was going to mention this for Flowerbelle. Certainly, you can at least talk with Dr. Summers. It seems to me that some of the symptoms for Mycoplasma (also known as Feline Infectious Anemia) can show themselves in very odd ways and can be different from cat to cat. IF Wendall is positive, then it is very possible that he may have the pneumonia mycoplasma :bawling: Here are some of the symptoms in cats.

Coughing, Sneezing, Sniffling, Straining to urinate, Blood in urine, frequent urination, arthritis, anemia, colitis (bloody/mucoid diarrhea) Conjunctivitis, Lethargy, Depression, Weakness, Loss of weight, skin abscesses, raspy/phlegmy cough and elevated/deep breathing at times.

Wendall, Perla and Pipsqueak all have differing symptoms. None are the same but are on the list. :( Perla only had Conjunctivitis and tested postivie!!!!!!!!! Wendall has lethargy, mild anemia in a past blood test :( (dumb vet never thought to suggest running test :bawling:), raspy breathing and cough, deep breathing on occasion. Pip as blood in urine, frequent urination, colitis at times.

Will be VERY interesting to see if Wendall and Pip test positive. Yes - at least I will have an answer..... :cross:

p.s. The panel IS 100% effective in diagnosing UR disease (s). Swabs of the eyes and throat are cultured. Very accurate test. Charge was $183.00
