AWW thank you ALL sooooo much. I am going to get some pictures of her eye tonight. IN the meantime, here are a couple that I love of her before this ever started with her eye. She is a precious princess and absolutely the sweetest little angel in my eyes. :heart3: And of course this is her famous profile - FRANKENBROW with a turned up nose and her teeny ears!!!!! :lol3:

She is indeed a sweet looking angel!  Thank you for sharing.  I soooo am sending vibes that her eye continues to heal.

It will be I wonderful if the Hydrogel proves to be a successful treatment for this terrible problem.

Her eye is even a bit better today.. :D I really do think that the Azithromycin is working. She has to stay on this for FOUR weeks, though. I HATE giving liquids. I never know if I should go fast and get it over with OR slower so she can swallow a little at a time. She takes it so well but is not happy about the taste, triple fish flavor. It does not make her drool or foam, but she gags a little. I guess fast is better? :dk: Just get it over with quickly. I will call the specialist in another day or two with a report on Perla's eye. It really looks good this morning :clap: and I am so completely relieved that there is improvement!! :happy3:

Thank YOU friends :hugs: :hugs: Your kindness and support has helped so very much :heart4:

Lauren, when I'm giving oral meds I generally use the 'quicker is better' approach.  Of course, if Perla is taking it without much difficulty the gentle approach might be the better option for her.

I'm tickled to read that her eye appears better
I don't know about you, but I always expect meds to kick in immediately, and wonder "what the hey?" when they don't. (guess I'm a tad impatient)

The pics you posted of Miss Perla are beautiful, what a sweetheart

I'm sending you and the Little Princess heaps and heaps of
----healing for your baby girl, calming for you.  Got my fingers crossed that the eye continues to improve!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Oh Lauren!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy093.gif[/quote] and :wow: - it's working FAST now!   Oh just more :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: this will completely clear it!!!! And then lysine will keep it gone! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: !!!!!

Yeah - I hate liquids too. The diagel isn't a liquid, it's a thick paste. But it's in a syringe. Since they do NOT like the taste, I go for the quick-is-better. It makes them gag anyway, so I just go for the once. It makes Ming Loy and Chum drool a bit, but.... I still prefer to get it over with, and I think it's easier on them that way. It sucks either way..... :(

Thanks girls!!!! I think I am going to do the quicker method with her. I tried the gentle, slow method and she started squirming to get away  SO fast it is, gagging or not. Thank goodness it is only once a day. I don't know how I will do this for a month straight though :nervous: I honestly think she is so used to me doing something to her each and every day - it has become a routine :lol3: Bless her little heart :heart3: OH I did get some pictures of her eye today - it is NOT easy - because #1 she runs away when she sees me with the camera and #2 she blinks at the flash. Larry will be back from Denver Friday evening and I need him to show me HOW to put pictures on the computer from my camera :anon:. I am NOT good with technology and rely on Larry for that stuff  I think it is high time I learn how to do that transfer!! I will post them but you will all say "WHAT is the problem, Lauren!!! Her eye looks REALLY good!" :woohoo: I want to post them anyway so IF her eye gets bad again you can see the difference and I can compare too. Good plan, right :D :clap::clap:

Oh Lauren, I've been reading this thread and I feel so sad that you and your beautiful Perla have been through so much with her eye:(  I saw her pictures , OMG she is such a gorgeous girl!  But after reading that her eye is getting better I feel so hopeful and relieved, I will pray everyday for Perla.  It seems the medicines are working.  You know that I feel your pain because I've been going through something similar with Lucas's condition and I understand how helpless we feel when we can't find the answer or the right treatment for our babies.  But I think you are on the right track and Perla will continue to do better.  Give her a kiss for me.  I'll be praying

Hugs, Tammy

Hi Tammy - It helps to have the support of others for sure and I appreciate your prayers for my :princess: This ocular Herpes is just relentless and such a horrible virus and just when you think you have things under control BAM - another flare up :sobbing: Perla's eye does seem better although this morning there was some more brownish dried discharge :sniffle: But we are only on day six of the Azithromycin and have three more weeks to go. The other problem is that Perla IS a very sensitive kitty and stresses SO easily - like your Lucas :rub: I just thought of this today :doh3: and will discuss with Dr. Lindley - what about putting her on an antidepressant for a few weeks? The same thing Pipsqueak was on!!! Elavil. Because stress can definitely bring on the herpes flare ups too. Wendall doesn't help much :sigh: He still likes to "tease" her from time to time in the evenings and I have to go :stomp: :yelling: after him. He is getting the drift, though, LEAVE PERLA ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, yeah, this is just an ongoing battle - day in and day out. We will see where this leads in the next month. :cross: :vibes::vibes:

Yes, sometimes stress makes them weaker and they can get sick easier.  oh my, I understand what you are going through with Wendall, here it is Nena who likes to bother my Lucas and sometimes I think she is what has caused him to be so stressed and I feel bad, but what can we do, we can't give away our babies.

I hope this time Perla gets better for good, I know that disease is awful, is not fair that dear Perla has to go through that, I'll keep  praying for her and for you

Had a talk with the specialist today. She wanted me to know that I must have misunderstood about Perla's eye being removed!! She said NO at this time.... because she has many other treatments that we can try for Perla. She just wanted me to keep that in the back of my mind that IF Perla's eye worsens over time and nothing is helping or working, and she is in constant pain, then we would discuss the eye being enucleated. BUT she did not mean anytime soon in Perla's case. She said that Perla's condition does not warrant that at this time That made me feel better because I was thinking that she was giving up :lol3:

Perla's eye is looking better. Still weepy, a few tiny pustules on the outer lids, but she is holding it about 90% open now.:clap::clap::clap: Dr. L. wants me to get OTC Ketotifen drops. It is an antihistamine and this might help her. She also mentioned that we could biopsy one of the little sores and I will discuss this further tomorrow when I pick up the next two week supply of Azithromycin. She wants me to use diluted soapy water to wash the outer lids which I don't quite understand and will ask more about that tomorrow. I sure don't want any soap getting in her eye. I think I will use the CS on the outer lids too. She said absolutely NO :nono: to any steroid eye drop or any oral steroid!! A steroid will open her up for a herpes flare up. So we won't risk that ever.

BUT my little angel :princess: is doing pretty darn good, friends  :D :happy3: :party4: OH and she is such a wonderful little patient too. Allowing me to treat her over and over is just so sweet. I think she loves her momma and her mommy time. She loves it when I dote on her - no matter what it is. :heart3: :rub: :heart2:

Lauren, Look what is on the Winn today:
Treatment of feline ocular herpesvirus infection
Each year, the Winn Feline Foundation receives proposals from veterinary researchers around the world who are interested in improving feline health. To date, Winn’s cumulative total in feline health research funding exceeds $4 million. Forty-four proposals were submitted by researchers seeking funding in this review cycle. This year, our team of veterinary consultants helped Winn select 10 projects for funding, for a total of $174,018. Here is one of those projects:
W12-042
Development and in vitro optimization of hydrogels for the delivery of FHV specific siRNAs encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles
Investigators: Rebecca Wilkes, Scott Lenaghan, Christopher Stephens; University of Tennessee
Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) typically causes respiratory disease in cats. However, chronic infections can cause severe eye disease that may lead to blindness. Currently there is no effective treatment for these chronic cases. Previous Winn funding has helped the investigators design a therapeutic agent – small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) – which use the cell’s own machinery to inhibit viral replication through the targeting of essential herpesvirus genes. The investigators have developed a nanoparticle delivery vehicle composed of chitosan, a nontoxic substance, to package these siRNAs for delivery into cells. The goal of this study is to develop a hydrogel, similar to a soft contact lens, for delivery of the nanoparticles. The hydrogel can be placed directly into the cat’s eye, allowing for successful drug uptake. This method will also provide extended continuous delivery of the FHV-1 specific siRNAs into the cells of the cornea. This study will potentially lead to development of a product suitable for use in cats’ eyes for the treatment of FHV-1 infections.

I don't know what and when this will come up, but maybe you want to keep an eye on it (no pun intended :lol3:), or have your vet check out the TN Uni group.... Maybe she can participate in the trial :dk: Seems that they already developed an agent, and are working on another one.... You might have some hope.... I know it is far fetched.... But.... Who knows! :cross: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
Dr. L. did know about this proposal!!! I thought she might. It is only in the very beginning stages of the trial period for possible future treatment for this disease. Would be very promising and save many kitties eyes from this horrible ocular herpes infection. Since it is only in the "studying" phase - it could be a very long time for it to come to fruition. We can hope it is sooner than later!:clap: She will keep me up on her findings on Hydrogel!

Hopefully, this study will come up with the cure for herpes eye.  There are so many kitties out there that need it.
