Use gently warm water on a soft cloth, fairly wet. Hold the cloth against the eye gently, then wipe out and slightly downward. Repeat as necessary.

The baby gate will help IF the kittens cannot get stuck in the openings. I prefer to just close the door to the room unless you can supervise. [emoji]128522[/emoji]
