Need a little advice on this one please....
First time cat owner and still don't really know about hairballs..my boyfriend who has had many cats says this is a non-issue and my cat is just "working on a hairball"
About 3 or 4 days ago my cat started doing this thing occasionally throughout the day (maybe once or twice a day) where he looks like he has a hiccup or is gulping (I affectionately joke and say he looks like a turkey...ya know the way they do that thing with their neck).
He makes no sound when this happens, and doesn't seem too bothered by it either...I will go over to him to see if he seems distressed and he doesn't seem bothered, in fact sometimes he flops over for belly rubs or play and starts purring. There have been some times where I think it is bothering him so he goes to grab a little nibble of food (to help pass it through?)
There were 2 times in the past few days that he seemed like he was going to get the hairball up, a couple 'dry heaves' but nothing happened.
I guess my question is how long should it take them to get rid of a hairball? And at what point is a visit to the vet necessary? I don't want to overreact about a hairball, but not under-react if it's something more.
I know it's shedding season so he's more likely to have a hairball now, but I would love advice from others here. I did get some hairball gel for him and started that 2 days ago. I tried pumpkin but he will not touch the stuff.
He has had one hairball (months ago) that he did get up, but it took him a while (several days that time too.)
Thanks in advance everyone for your help
