I've never had so much anxiety going to the grocery store before. People are fighting over toilet paper and a guy got into an argument when the cashier because he had 4 packages and the limit is 2.

They had to block off the aisle with the toilet paper and paper towels because people were going bonkers. All the eggs are gone. Milk and general dairy products are limited. We couldn't find everything we needed. No cleaning products. Aisles are packed. Carts everywhere. Long lines.

Having an anxiety attack in a grocery store isn't fun.
Not nearly that bad here in Minnesota but definitely some panicked shoppers. I expect tomorrow would not be a good day to be in stores.

Okay, I am getting seriously annoyed that every vendor, store, casino, or utility that I have ever been associated with is sending me emails with their heartfelt concern and assurances of what they are doing to keep me safe from the COVID virus. Might be nice to hear from my doctors office with specific instructions on what to do if I get ill though.
I agree. Our on campus health guy talked to us and gave us a little info but honestly if I get sick at all I’ll be nervous to go to the doctor. I’m so concerned about spreading something or that people will think I’m panicking or getting unnecessary care if I just have a cold or something.

Here's a list I got from Facebook. The one thing I never see mentioned is to drink plenty of fluids. With a respiratory illness of any kind, you are exhaling a lot of moisture, so you need to replenish it.

Good advice from a nurse on Twitter if you should get the virus:

I know we’re all tired of hearing/talking about it, but one thing I HAVEN’T really seen going around is advice for what happens if you DO get coronavirus (many of us will), we're only seeing advice for how to try to AVOID it. So as your friendly neighborhood RN, a wee thread:

Things you should *actually* buy ahead of time (Erm, not sure what the obsession with toilet paper is?): Kleenex, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in 325 mg tablets, Ibuprofen (Advil) in 200 mg tablets, Mucinex, Robitussin or DayQuil/NyQuil, whatever your cough medicine of choice is.
If you don’t have a humidifier, that would also be a good thing to get. (You can also just turn the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom breathing in the steam.)
Just like we do for our kitties. Also a good time to make a big batch of your favorite soup to freeze and have on hand.
If you have a history of asthma and you have a prescription inhaler, make sure the one you have isn’t expired and refill it/get a new one if it is.
You basically just want to prepare as though you know you’re going to get a nasty respiratory bug like bronchitis or pneumonia. You just have the foresight to know it’s coming.
For symptom management, use the meds I mentioned. For a fever over 101, alternate Tylenol and Advil so you’re taking a dose of one or the other every 3 hours. Use both cough suppressants and expectorants (most cough meds have both). Drink a ton, hydrate hydrate. Rest lots.
If you're sick, you should not be leaving your house except to go to the doctor, and if you do, wear a mask (regular is fine, you don’t need an N95). You DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE ER unless you are having trouble breathing or your fever is very high and unmanaged with meds.
90% of healthy adult cases thus far have been managed at home with basic rest/hydration/over-the-counter meds. We don’t want to clog the ERs unless you’re actually in distress. The hospital beds will be used for people who actively need oxygen/breathing treatments/IV fluids.
If you have a pre-existing lung condition (COPD, emphysema, lung cancer) or are on immunosuppressants, now is a great time to talk to your PCP or specialist about what they would like you to do if you get sick. They might have plans to get you admitted and bypass the ER entirely.
One major relief to you parents is that kids do VERY well with coronavirus— they usually bounce back in a few days, no one under 18 has died, and almost no kids have required hospitalization (unless they have a lung disease like CF).
Just use pediatric dosing of the same meds.
(If you want to share, copy and paste.)

I have also heard and read from several sources that if you do get sick to call your doctor's office rather then just showing up at an urgent care or emergency room. Of course if someone becomes seriously ill that would be different. There was an emergency room where someone with this just showed up and everyone in the emergency room including staff was exposed. I saw video of the drive through testing being done in New York and it is inside tents, everyone working there is in hazmat suits and people only roll down their windows for the test.

Apparently an elderly woman was robbed in the parking lot of a Meijer. Someone grabbed her toilet paper from her cart and took off. It was a post on FB, so who knows if it's true, but it's very possible with what's going on. Safe shopping folks.

We currently have seven rolls of toilet paper so I bought a bunch of flushable feminine wipes from Amazon cause your girl ain't using a rag lol

What is the deal with toilet paper? I do not understand. I get the hand sanitizer and anything else that is a disinfectant but toilet paper. This virus does not involve an issue needing more toilet paper.
The only thing I can think is that people started buying it early to “prep” and then news that more and more people were buying it leaked so other people panicked and bought it in the fear it would run out and it just snowballed from there. Even I bought a package a few days ago because I figured it might as well. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Granted I bought a pack of like 9 rolls and that’s more than enough for a few months for me.

I did stock up on Carmex. That’s something I would miss dearly.

Because, if we have to stay home for a month, we need enough poo paper.
That is part of the reason why some states have begun calling out the National Guard. The ones that have done it already they are mainly to disinfect places at the school. As states begin to get the drive thru testing they will be used to keep things running smoothly. If it does turn into extended quarantines in homes they will be making deliveries of essentials one of which I am sure is toilet paper.

I don't know about the Governors in other states but the Governor here in Ohio is being proactive. He is listening to the doctors that are advising him, signing the needed orders and giving regular press conferences. I am just taking the sane precautions and let this thing play out, that is really all I can do.

Two things.....I don't know if this was posted or not and I don't know how to put it up on here (not that computer smart!) but if you remember years back there was a psychic named Sylvia Browne, she used to be on a tv show maybe Maury Povich but anyway she wrote a book in 2008 I think it was and she said something akin to "in around 2020 a severe pneumonia like illness will spread throughout the globe, attacking the lungs and the bronchial tubes and resisting all known treatments. Almost more baffling than the illness itself will be the fact that it will suddenly vanish as quickly as it arrived, attack again ten years later, and then disappear completely."

I hope that this is an accurate prediction!

The other thing people asking why people are buying toilet paper like crazy is:

"Why is everyone buying up all the toilet paper? Because every time one person sneezes 10,000 people **** themselves!" :)

I went to the store a little after 7 this morning which is my usual weekly trip. It was already crowded. This was a week that I only needed a few things, I usually do a big shopping every 4 or 5 weeks. One of the things I did need was toilet paper, I was down to a roll and a half which is my usual time to buy it. They did have some. The shelves were empty but they had a pallet of one kind out and it was already getting thinned out. It was the 6 jumbo roll packs and I got one. I buy a half gallon of organic milk at a time and I needed that. The only thing in the dairy case was a few half gallons of organic milk. I got that but I got whole milk which I usually don't buy but didn't have a choice there. I got my things for salad and coffee, still plenty of coffee. The guy that checked out ahead of me looked like he was getting ready for Armageddon. He had several large bottles of laundry detergent. He tried to buy four packs of the toilet paper that they had left, they only let him have two. I still don't understand the whole deal with toilet paper.

The Nebraska governor says they may close schools for 6-8 weeks. I really don't know what they expect everyone to do with their kids. 1 week is bad enough.

The Iowa governor doesn't want to close anything because of "the risk of unintended consequences". She seems sensible.

There's someone on Facebook Marketplace selling 6-packs of TP for $35. And some people are buying it!

I saw some people buying a lot of laundry detergent. I suppose they think it'll be a hot commodity if things get bad and go on too long.

The problem with closing everything too early and imposing other measures is that people will get bored and then when it will really matter they will ignore restrictions.

People are already known to have ignored quarantine and self isolation rules/guidance and have broken them (though typically I now can't find the articles).

We need to realise that the isolation etc is not only for us but to protect all those vulnerable people who we may interact with every day. Same as herd immunity and getting vaccinated for measles etc.

It's a really fine line in terms of timing and I think some places are going all out too soon...

Oh yes. College students here have been told to go home to their permanent residences if possible, but really they’re all back from spring break and no doubt they’re going to spend the next few weeks here in town having a party.

I was delivering food last night and there were already a ton of students back in the bar district. It will only snowball from there. In a couple of weeks we have fake pattys day, which is huge in our town; bars at this time are not going to close and there are obviously house parties everywhere. Lots of people travel in from other places for it too, so I’m sure that will be a hot mess, at best.

PA schools are closed for two weeks; Gov Wolf announced it yesterday. Some parents are already complaining about it because they have to work and there's nobody to watch their kids. The kids want to go outside with their friends, to the mall, etc. which defeats the whole purpose of the schools being closed.

OK, we went for some stocking-up groceries last night. Ran into Target for printer paper, and then to Giant. I was astounded at just how bare the shelves are. Still no TP, no disinfectant wipes, paper towels are really low, bottled water is really low. There's not a banana in sight anywhere. Potatoes, onions....nope. No eggs, cheaper bread is gone, no butter. not much in the way of milk. Spam? Nope. Canned tuna? Yeah, good luck with that. Still plenty of canned soups, peanut butter, etc. The rice was lower than normal, but still some bags there and plenty of brown rice, which is what we use. Oh yeah, I don't think there was a can of vegetables anywhere in the store. Seriously, not one can. Not even a can of red beets. Other than some cans of beans, no veggies. Has the world come to an end and we're the last ones to know? It was almost surreal last night. We went around 10 or so. And hopefully, that will be our last grocery store trip until the beginning of May.

We bought enough cat food to last the girls 45 days, at 3 cans a day. Bought extra bottled water, again for the girls. The girls are always my main concern.

Target is now limiting disinfectant wipes, TP, paper towels and the like to one to a customer (when it gets restocked, that is).

I've been ordering my groceries online for Walmart pickup. I like it, because going into the store tends to make me agitated. This week, I made my order as usual, no panic buying, and picked it up last night. I had ordered white bread, and they were completely out :ohwell: My mom got her order at the same time-she couldn't get any whole wheat bread. She was surprised she got her milk.

I didn't need toilet paper, but I searched it on the Walmart grocery site out of curiosity. So many brands were out of stock.

Isn't it kinda risky the way everybody is crowding into Walmart at once to stock up? All those people there at once? What if some of them have the Corona Virus? My mom keeps going to town for "one last trip." She did that 3 times. :rolleyes3:

When the virus hit the US I thought it might get really bad so I started buying extra food then. Not much but a little each time I went to the store. By the way, I am NOT hoarding toilet paper! :) I think we are set for a few weeks now and I have made sure I have enough pet food. and litter. I picked up 2 40 pound bags yesterday just as a precaution since I hadn't thought about that early on.

I saw on the news yesterday that someone here in Waldorf caught the virus. He was in the military and was stationed in Korea. I wonder if he passed it on to anybody here before he found out he had it.

From what I hear there are long lines in all the stores here and there are many bare shelves.
