Is there any way you could afford to build some type of cat enclosure that would allow him to go out a window into the enclosure?? My 6 cats were outside cats untill 4 years ago ..One was bitten by a neighbors cat..After that I vowed never again could they roam outside. Two howled and yowled for hours went on for months. I finally bought the Purrrrfect cat fencing system.. They can go in and out as they please during the day into early evening then I shut them inside. this worked. Just a idea/

Hi Stewball!

Yes I have bought a harness and my husband has taken him out with it on him

that was an experience since Bro is 8 and never had been in any harness before

We also let him out loose today for 20 minutes and watched him..

He also was in his huge cage for 2 hours outside on the porch today

so now he is in for the night along with his new sister Lily..7 months old

I will put him in a room with a clean litter box and night light and bed

and her in her cage with a clean litter box and bed for the night inside

our house..

Waiting on the rescue remedy drops for pets to arrive by mail to try those

with Bro on a treat this week before bedtime to see if that helps reduce the meowing

loudly and episodes all night..Unless one has been sleep deprived for over one month

as we all have..they can not understand how your mind is not alert nor the body anymore.

Thanks for writing and caring.

Hi Garden and Cats

That is a great idea

Due to expenses and my not having the total decision making

we were not able to build a place outside for them.

We did buy the two cages and that was a lot of money

for those...one inside and one on the porch..

Glad you worked your situation out and that is wonderful...

I would like the same..on a side of the house that is

sunny in winter and shady in summer due to the high heat

and humidity we have from April to November...

I will read up on your product to learn...always need to learn to pass

on to others I meet in person,

SheriT

@SheriT    They are both such gorgeous cats, and it is terrible to think of Bro so distressed.   He is such a handsome tiger and should be relaxed in his home, together with you.   This is so sad.

Willing this rescue remedy to arrive quickly and hoping it helps to take the edge off what ever is happening from Bro through the night time.

Me too, lets hope it works...and I will surely write a good review if it does on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had the water bottle out today and Lily who is our new addition and 7 months old

has had to be sprayed 6 times..she is a kitten and she is destructive but to her it is having fun...!!!!!!!!

LOL

She knows what that water bottle sprayer is ...you ought to see the look on her face when I hold it up across the room

and say you see this LILY!

She has a lot of expression in her eyes..LOL

She is so feisty she will go back and do the same thing after you spray her..at times..

Bro is in for the night and quiet for now...till later..

How are your pets tonight?

Just a thought as an old horse trainer. I'd go with some type of short term medication to break the behavior cycle while finding ways to make his indoor life more satisfying. If you have an outdoor enclosure you are sure is dog/predator safe you might invest in one of the heated outdoor cat houses. Suncatcher Cages by Design make great components for indoor/outdoor access for your cat. Sadly given the loose dogs, coyotes and other predatory animals where we live it would have been cost prohibitive to try and retrofit their systems for our living environment.

Kittens Mom

thank you for writing me..posting your thoughts.

all good ideas!

If the rescue remedy does not work in a few days

after arrival this week, then the next step  will be the  lowest dose

of something vet prescribes for breaking the cycle

as you said to me..and others..did..

I hope that the rescue remedy works..it may or may not.

I had no idea until others shared on bringing in an outdoor

cat that some might not adjust and I can see why putting myself

in the cats mind...

I have had cats since a child..so for

50 some years or more I have an idea how they think...

and what makes them happy...and what distresses them..

My idea of the perfect scenario would be to have a 30 by 30 foot

fence and fenced on top..and concrete on the bottom poured a nice

bottom and then some places to get up and sit inside..and lay

in a part sunny part shady area of the yard very close to the house

That is not financially feasible ...to me or most other cat or dog owners..

I appreciate your writing me...and caring...about Bro and us too.

Thanks again

BTW I was introduced to Rescue Remedy  Bachs Flowers over 20 years ago. I used it on a particularly screwy TB mare. It worked very well and I've used it on animals and myself many times. And yes the perfect safe cat enclosure is pretty cost prohibitive.

Oh dear little Lily, she sounds like a live wire.
Not what you need when your patience is thin from lack of sleep.

Do take care with her and using the water spray technique as, althought she currently seems defiant and not phased, it can result in anxiety for many cats.  Even if you have used this method successfully before.   It may seem exhausting when the main thing you want it rest and sleep but diverting her scratching and other behaviours you wish to stop to less precious / easily damaged surfaces or appropriate play can be more effective in the long run and help to build a really strong and positive bond between you and your cat (rather than the big human who is always telling her off).   There are a few articles here on TCS about how this works if you haven't seen them, but perhaps for when you have managed to get a little rest.

SheriT, I just had a thought.  I'm sorry it didn't hit me much sooner.  Buy some chamomile tea.  It comes in tea bags at the grocery store, in the regular tea aisle.  Chamomile tea is perfectly safe for cats in small doses, and is calming and relaxing for them.  A medium sized cat should take approx. 1/2 tsp by mouth.  Bro looks like a pretty big boy, so a full tsp will not hurt him in the least.  Give it to him about half an hour before bedtime.  Drink the rest of the cup yourself.  Both of you will feel better.

Also, if you can find valerian root, chop is small and tie it in a little piece of cloth for him.  It acts somewhat like catnip, but with more of a sedative (very mild) effect.  You can order it online.

If the chamomile tea does work, it will only cost you about 4 bucks for 20 tea bags, and both of you get the good of it!  Sweeten for you, not for him!

Hi There

Lily is just a live wire right now being a young cat at almost 7 months old this month..

I am kind to her..and she slept with me last night and was perfectly content

and sweet..but at 5 am she wanted to bite the lampshade and tear it up

then it went to up the wood doors and sliding down them..with nails

and then to my good couch..

I have a tall scratching post and put liquid spray catnip on it, I have one on the floor and she has toys...she has all she needs....

My other kittens did the same behaviors , some not as bad as she but that

couch is covered with sheets and she went under the sheet on purpose the other day and was trying to tear the couch fabric..I called her on it and she

stuck her head out and stared at me..as to say ..stop  me..can you?

I sprayed her head with the fine water mist of the bottle and she took

off running to get into something else..Smiles..

thanks for all advice..

Kittens will keep one active...won't they?US....

Lily, the little darling - my girls used to do that when I put throw covers on my furniture.  It just made it all the more inviting to them offering something to climb under and then play...
I have a far too clear picture of her cute little face as she looked back at you @SheriT  .     One thought - how long do the night zoomies go on for if you don't respond to her at all?   Any attention to a cat is a potential reinforcement for the behaviour.   Only responding to the behaviours you want them to repeat is the most effective (if also the hardest) way to alter what they want to get up to.

Be very careful using Valerian with cats - it has the oposite effect with cats to how it works with humans.  It actually stimulates cats.   Mouse reacts even more strongly to it than catnip and gets very over excited and aggressive so it is a total no-no in my home.

Hi Sheri, since you are waiting on the Rescue Remedy to arrive, As I offered before in out PM, I would be more than happy to send you the calming treats from 1-800-Pet Meds. They were too much for Angel's tummy.

He did ok on just one, but it is one for every 10 lbs, so when I gave him 1 & 1/2, he threw up, but now, we know that may have been for another reason.

Here is a link to see what they are. Basically just L-Tryptophan, chamomile, & ginger.  They are kind of large for a cat, so I just broke them up.

thank you so much.... rescue remedy to be here today or tommorow..in mail..

Bro did better last night lst time in way over 30 some nights..

Prayers of someone worked..

He was quieter in the small utility room with clean litter box and a toy

and door closed..I wish I had tried that a month ago...

however I think some prayers have made the improvement

as of last night...I give that credit to Jesus Christ..

All prayers are not answered and some not in our timing in life

the way we want the outcome to happen...

I learned that in older age..myself..even when we are in direct

line in obedience in our lives and doing what he asks us each day

to do ..witness,  grow closer in bible reading daily, pray for others

and let him shine through our words , actions..

I am thankful for the improvement in Bro..

Give Angel a hug for me today..

thanks

OK. Yes, I know and believe that too. I have laid hands on Angel & prayed many times!  I'm glad it's getting better, & you finally got a little sleep.

Unfortunately Angel just threw up what little food he ate this morning. I gave him his appetite stimulant this morning, & his  anti-nausea just now. (had to drag him out from under the bed for it
but wanted to get it in him, so he will feel better).
