I have always watched my cats go to the toilet just to be sure everything is okay with them. Everything has been normal until last week.
1 week ago, I watched my cat (Mimi, born May ‘21) do a poop. Looked normal. 1 hour later, she started squirting diarrhoea and there was a small rectal prolapse afterwards which went back in immediately. No more diarrhoea since. We took her to the vet following day and they ran a fecal sample which came back with nothing however they gave her metronidazole initially anyway just in case until the results came back. He also said she had full anal sacs and expressed them for her. Since then, every time she poops, her rectum prolapses during the pooping and then goes back in. Behaviour is otherwise normal, eating normally, doesn’t appear to be constipated or dehydrated.
since this happened I’ve been watching the other cat (Henry, born October ‘21) poop also. The pooping has been normal. Today he did a poop and his rectum prolapsed in the same way as Mimi. Again he doesn’t appear to be constipated and it went straight back in. Also some background, Henry had giardia in December when we got him which he was treated for and hasn’t had any recurrence since. During the giardia he never once prolapsed. I was home everyday watching him and it never happened.
the vet recommended an ultrasound as the next step but they haven’t really been acting like they care much and keep saying the ‘monitor’ approach is best and haven’t given us any idea what could be causing this so we decided to book a specialist appointment however I could only get in on Feb 7 and the anticipation is killing me. Has anyone experienced this? They are both Toygers from the same breeder. We don’t feed them any dry food. There has been no vomiting either. Thanks.
