I have always watched my cats go to the toilet just to be sure everything is okay with them. Everything has been normal until last week.

1 week ago, I watched my cat (Mimi, born May ‘21) do a poop. Looked normal. 1 hour later, she started squirting diarrhoea and there was a small rectal prolapse afterwards which went back in immediately. No more diarrhoea since. We took her to the vet following day and they ran a fecal sample which came back with nothing however they gave her metronidazole initially anyway just in case until the results came back. He also said she had full anal sacs and expressed them for her. Since then, every time she poops, her rectum prolapses during the pooping and then goes back in. Behaviour is otherwise normal, eating normally, doesn’t appear to be constipated or dehydrated.

since this happened I’ve been watching the other cat (Henry, born October ‘21) poop also. The pooping has been normal. Today he did a poop and his rectum prolapsed in the same way as Mimi. Again he doesn’t appear to be constipated and it went straight back in. Also some background, Henry had giardia in December when we got him which he was treated for and hasn’t had any recurrence since. During the giardia he never once prolapsed. I was home everyday watching him and it never happened.

the vet recommended an ultrasound as the next step but they haven’t really been acting like they care much and keep saying the ‘monitor’ approach is best and haven’t given us any idea what could be causing this so we decided to book a specialist appointment however I could only get in on Feb 7 and the anticipation is killing me. Has anyone experienced this? They are both Toygers from the same breeder. We don’t feed them any dry food. There has been no vomiting either. Thanks.

What do you feed them? How much water is available?

At the moment I’m feeding them the hills science diet wet food mixed with water. They don’t drink much water from the fountain or bowl so I make sure to mix plenty into their food. They were on raw previously but the vet recommended to stay off it because Henry had the giardia

Hills isn't a very good brand. Too many indigestible junk fillers. I wonder if that is somehow causing the poop to somehow cause a prolapse? Has the vet ever suggested to gently reinsert a minor prolapse using a cotton swab and sterile lubricant?

Have you contacted the breeder and asked if rectal prolapses are common with the breed or if she / he had any issues with prolapses in the colony and cats sold?

I'm not sure if there's a connection between a raw diet and giardia. These TCS threads might have info:

A home cooked diet would eliminate the possible parasite concerns and still be just as healthy as a raw diet. The Raw and Home Cooked forum here on TCS has more info on how to make a proper home cooked diet.

did the vet not suggest a colopexy ? my cat had an intussuspection and that caused a prolapse and colitis, had to do surgery. i hope u can do the ultrasound asap and id also try to find another vet. If they dont look concerned about this i cant expect much.

the first vet who saw my baby treated her for 10 days and it only got worse
