Petco has its own brand of wet food, Soulistic, which is affordable. We had pretty good luck with it.

Easiest test is to not give the dry food and see what happens. I've read that dry food can be problematic because it absorbs liquid in the stomach and expands. This is going to sound crazy, but a cat's stomach is around the size of a ping-pong ball.
