Sweden is doing quite well with much less stringent measures.
They aren't actually, when compared to nearby countries that took stricter measures. They so far have had something like 22 deaths per 100,000, while Denmark has had around 7 deaths per 100,000, depsite Denmark being more.densely populated. Yes they do have a lower death rate than some other countries, but, when compared, they're also much wealthier, have a healthier population (less smoking, etc.), and have a better health care system.

Now, they claim they're just getting it over with faster, that eventually everybody will have similar death rates, plus they have the hospital capacity so that nobody that needed a ventilator would go without. I suppose when it's all over with we'll see if their method worked better in the long run than the other countries.
Sweden says its coronavirus approach has worked. The numbers suggest a different story

I think the real test for Sweden's approach is if or more likely when there is a second wave. Sweden will have a higher percentage of people who have been exposed the first time around then the neighboring Scandinavian countries. Even if there is little to no immunity left it will not be a new virus to the immune system of people who have been previously exposed. Their system should handle it better then it did the first time. They may have much more in the way of very mild cases. Their head medical person who is the person who decided on this strategy has said this virus is here to stay and we must learn how to live with it, we can't stay shut down.

Yes, having a stronger health care system would make things easier. Think of all the people here who will get sick (in general, not just with COVID) but because of lost jobs and lost health insurance may not be able to seek medical care.

So I agree with the extension of the stay at home order in Illinois, but looks like people are fighting it. One lawyer, after suing, received a pass just for himself to not follow. Another lawyer is doing it on behalf of "all Illinois residents"...? Um, I didn't ask for this!

Is this happening in other states? I know some are dropping the stay at home at end of April, others mid-May. So just wondering if this is an isolated incident to Illinois, where the stay at home has been extended to May 30th, or if people in other states are fighting the stay at home this hard.

Second Illinois lawmaker files lawsuit against Gov. Pritzker's stay-at-home order

There have been protests against it in several states including mine (CA). There is talk of some opening up here on May 15, but that is not final and the governor will be monitoring the latest from the medical experts before approving that.

SD never had a state-wide shutdown order. Businesses and individuals are taking precautions of their own accord. But the governor has released her "back to normal" recommendations, advising certain businesses to relax restrictions. The virus is estimated to peak here mid-June. So I don't think a lot of businesses are going to go back to normal now.

There are still protesters even though there's no lockdown order. Idk what they want exactly :dunno:.

My friend who lives in Mitchell says that everything is open for business but she's certainly not going out so I'm not sure how populated those places are. She's wondering if the swim team will resume practices and meets.

Here is KS there is talk of lifting the order and doing a phased opening. Not really sure what the phases are but I've seen a lot of things where most businesses will open but will encourage people to wear masks and have limits on how many can be in the store and how far apart people should ideally be.

I have heard from my boss that the university will follow the state's recommendations, but will be doing a slow opening themselves and that we will be working from home for awhile longer.

SWIM TEAM??? That would be a sure recipe for senseless infections and deaths. I hope someone upstairs has the intellectual ability to stop that.

Oh yes, she's one of the coaches. It's unfortunate because that is one of her main sources of income, but since they are a nonprofit she can't collect unemployment. And she had told me that there was open registration for a meet sometime in May but she's not sure if it will proceed or not (though I guess at a state level no one is going to stop them). She says it is sure tempting to go because she could use the money but she is taking this very seriously so will not.

Why does it being a non profit mean she can't get unemployment? I worked for a non profit for 10 years and that doesn't sound right. Double checked and yeah, in all the state non profits still have to deal with unemployment claims.

I'm not sure - that was just the reason she gave as to why she was not approved.

She's relatively lucky - she works part time for a coffee shop and told them she wasn't comfortable coming into work, so they're still paying her to run their social media. But with everything opening up I wonder how long she can do that before they'll expect her to come back in.

Costco announced today that starting Monday, all shoppers and employees have to wear masks. I wonder if they’ll provide masks if members come unprepared. It wouldn’t surprise me. Weeks ago as this thing was just getting started, they had an employee stationed at the entrance wiping down cart handles as people entered.

They certainly charge enough in membership fees just to set foot in their stores -- so yeah, Costco, cut loose some of that money for masks. It's the least you can do.

Knowing Costco and their customer service, yes, I'm sure they will provide masks. It would also be awfully rude for a large company to require masks and not provide them, which I'm sure is why Walmart isn't requiring masks for customers---they don't want to provide them.

(Side note---for anyone who buys mid-grade kibble, cat or dog, for more than a couple of pets, a Costco membership will pay for itself just in pet food.)

It did for me! When I had dogs and cats both. With 4 cats now getting the litter at Costco saves me the membership fee plus the other things I save on there, I come out ahead.

My town is requiring mandatory masks in stores, starting May 1st. I used to work at Walmart and just asked a co-worker if she was still there and how things were going. She said starting May 1st all workers will be wearing masks and gloves (although some may be already as a personal choice), and they will have a sign on each entrance door stating customers must wear a mask. She did not state whether or not supplies were provided or not.

In an article about the the mandatory face covering requirements, it states "businesses are required to refuse admission or services to anyone not wearing a face cover." Also, "Penalties will include a citation with fines of up to $750, and individuals as well as businesses that defy the order can both be cited."

But we'll see how that goes. Many stores do not have their own security team, and knowing people I'm sure some won't listen. Wonder if the police will be called a lot to enforce the rules and regulations for customers entering stores without.

Yeah, it's beyond frustrating.
