So far we had 3 cases in the St Louis area (meaning surrounding areas even in Illinois) where the patient died just a day after testing positive. I am not scared of dying but I am frightened of being in pain as I can't take meds of any kind no matter what. And if I die I always have in my mind who will take care of my Mom and the cats. Obviously no one wanted to put food in the bowls for the cats two months ago when I'm hobbling in sleet on crutches, they aren't going to take over if I pass from this. I will be 65 in December and my immune system is down because of the injuries and the mosquito bite thing last summer that left me sick for some time.

As far as isolation: most people on this site know that I've been isolated for years except for the once a week shopping but it only takes that one time at the stores.

We will peak and then taper off. It's a matter of how high we go when we peak. The cases in Italy overwhelmed the health care system which is what we are trying to avoid with the closures, social distancing and working from home where ever possible. Trying to slow the spread and lower the number of people who contract this. That is what angered be when I saw the pictures of crowded beaches in Florida over Spring Break. One kid told an interviewer he didn't care if he got Coronovirus, he was going to party. I thought it isn't just about you, in fact in reality it has very little to do with just you, it is about everyone and a health system that can easily be completely overwhelmed.
I actually put most of the blame on the Governor of Florida, those beaches should have been closed and whatever force necessary used to clear those beaches.

I hope his parents saw that and tore into him! I would wring my kids necks if they were that stupid!!! The terrible thing is you see that attitude every day - ME-ME-ME. They feel they deserve everything and it is partially because we didn't teach them that others are more important. It isn't just the kids either, I have seen it in adults old enough to know better. Just look at the hoarding in this situation - same mentality that they are more important and deserving than the next person.

UK stats below as of yesterday, updated a day in arrears.

I'm scared that if something happens to me there is no one to care for my cats, or maintain the aquariums. I'm like Jem, most of the time I think it will pass and we'll be OK and then I get worried and I think 'what if?'

It's hard to try too see the good side of things, with the whole country in an obligatory quarentine. But, this last two days I have seen more bees, whasps and butterflies than in the last three months. I live in Buenos Aires, in the middle of the city, and it's nice taking a break from all the noise too. Still, there is this sad feeling in the air. I hope we can get through this soon.

I was thinking they all were standing too close too, tell your mom great minds think alike! :lol2:

as were CVS and Walgreens. Picked up an instant read ear Rexall brand one for around $12 at Dollar General (and can work it) They also had TP & paper towels limited to 2 per person. We've had our first death here in town, there's been more in Chicago. Governor put entire State on stay-at-home, closed all non essential businesses. Exceptions are Vet offices, stores that sell food, health services and laundromats. Restaurants can still have pickup and can deliver. No more than 10 people can gather at a time and must stay 6 ft apart.
I was furloughed w\o pay last Tue but Gypsys dad is still working. Very scary since he is a cashier.
Stay safe stay strong and stay brave :grouphug2::grouphug::vibes:
Glad someone else noticed it and thought the same, haha!

Sending postive energy to Gypsys dad and thank him. He is very brave and it is very needed to have people willing to continue to work in essential businesses.

I think in time this will become one of the Corona Viruses that are endemic to humans. It will continue to mutate and as a species our immune system will recognize it. Many of our colds are caused by a Corona virus. The issue right now is that it made the jump from bats and it is not something endemic to humans and we are still very early in this cycle.

The same thing happened with the Spanish Flu. They were able to get a sample from victims buried in permafrost and it was very close to bird flu. It had made one small mutation which made it communicable among humans. This Corona virus initially was a 96% match for the one endemic in bats. The Spanish Flu didn't disappear, it continued to mutate and we as humans accommodated ourselves to it. The Spanish Flu's descendent is now one of the strains of seasonal flu.
Lots of great information, thank you for sharing! Very interesting.

Ugh. By my local news station founded 50 years ago. So reliable source. Believe it or not there was a time we only had 3 to 5 tv stations.

Police investigate ‘disturbing’ video of teens coughing on produce
This reminds me of someone a couple months ago that opened a package of ice cream and licked it and put it back on the shelf. He posted it to social media. He claimed he went back later and bought it, but the video went viral and the store tossed all their ice cream and restocked it. He also was fined. I hope similar consequences of some type to hold the young man responsible is done. That is not funny and, what if he was unknowingly carrying it??

You know...I have days where I'm like...we'll be fine...this too shall pass...but then I get these little internal freak outs once in a while thinking about China, Italy, Iran etc...and wonder...what if.
China has started to come out of this, and it took what...about 3 months? But poor Italy, doesn't seem like there will be an end and with several other countries with numbers climbing by the thousands...IDK...sorry, just venting.
Me, too. :hugs: Although, China made very drastic changes in hot spot areas and I wonder if the US is doing enough. Vent away, better to get it out, thank you for sharing. :heartshape:

I understand your fears. Stay as safe as you can. Cats are resourceful and will hunt for their own food, if they need to. With less people going out, I wonder if any wildlife is creeping into residential areas as they feel safer. If so, this may increase food availability for cats in more urban areas.

Agree with seeing spring breakers out. Stereo typically, younger people feel more invincible, and it is sad they are not taking this more seriously, especially because this is about protecting your neighbor.

My backyard backs up to a park in my neighborhood. Despite being in Illinois where people have been told to not go out unless for essentials, there are people passing each other on the trails and not moving onto the grass when passing. People are also playing frisbee golf, which means multiple people may be touching the metal structures the frisbees get tossed into at the end of each course. There is metal chains hanging that hands may brush against when grabbing the frisbee out. The frisbee may also get germs by brushing the structure.... My mom thinks the risk was low, but I think it is a concern!

I completely understand your fears. I don't know where my cats would go if I ever pass away. On top of that you have the worry of your mom. I wish I had an answer for you, but all i can say is to keep looking until you find a solution.

I made my niece promise me that if I ever pass, and she can't afford to take on my cat's, to find a good home. And stay in touch with the new owners.

I follow a lot of scientists and healthcare professionals on twitter, and I won't repost what they've been saying here because some people don't need to be made to feel more anxious right now, but for anyone trying to get non-essential tasks done today before shelter in place orders go into effect: please don't. Just go without. You do not want to get this. You do not want to die this way. And if you recover, your lungs won't be the same. The people who got this early on are the lucky ones, because the hospital had enough resources to take care of them.

Any precautions you are taking are not an overreaction. Do more if you can. Wash your hands before leaving the grocery store. Keep your distance from people. Just talking and breathing releases viral particles. Set your mail down for 24 hours before opening it (it can last a day on paper, 3 days on plastic). Wipe down things you have to touch from outside sources with whatever you have. (This virus is pretty easy to kill outside the body, even if all you have is soap and water, that's better than nothing.)

And then there's that other thing in my mind: since I am now shopping for us, and with sanitizing the products I pick up and bring home, wearing the latex gloves, sanitizing the gloves, what if Mom still gets this virus? Did she get it from the mail carrier, or maybe I carried it back to her? As she is not venturing outside except poking her head out the door to get the mail that she insists on doing or the police will evict you for doing it for her as she has called the police to evict on less things than this.

Not sure where to post this, but I will here anyway because I thought it was funny....out of the mouth of babes....

My sister, after weeks of minimal grocery shopping to avoid the all the hordes of people, was low on pretty much everything for her family. She went a did a big grocery shop - not a hording shop - to restock her fridge and pantry, including some treats and snacks for the kids. Well, after she brings in all her grocery bags, my youngest niece comes around the corner and sees all the goodies filling up the floor in the kitchen. She then has a big smile on her face, eyes wide and excited about the treats, and starts to do a little dance as she proclaims...."Oooooo....Corrrrrrronaaaaaa!" in a very Latina inspired accent, emphasizing the "R" roll.

My sister had a good laugh, told me about it and I had a good laugh....I hope you read this and also have a good laugh at the innocence and yet somewhat inappropriate comments that kids come up with.

Now I feel like I should have wiped down everything I got at the grocery today. Whoops. I did wear gloves while in the store.

I feel like we're going to get it eventually and just hope it's not too bad.

I read that people with O type blood are most resistant to the virus, and type A is most likely to have difficulties. My husband is A pos and I'm B neg. So yeah.

you cant let your fear overwhelm you. do you have any friends that can be there for your mom? im not saying i think anything will happen to you. :hugs: but i feel better that i have a plan set with my niece to help my cats. it might make you feel better to have a friend, or a church (not sure if you go to church, just an idea) in close contact in case your family needs help.

hope everything works out. :vibes::heartshape:

My mom is talking about ordering from some local restaurants and getting food delivered. I'm sure the food could be left on the porch for us, but now I'm wondering the safety of eating prepared food?? Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I actually do prefer take out. The delivery service is just another layer of possible contamination. Unless you actually have coronavirus then yeah you should use a delivery service of course.

Thanks. Just talked to my mom and a doctor on the news apparently said to heat food up in the microwave, if you get delivery. I was a bit skeptic, but think she and my brother are fine with trying it, it seems.

Most of our friends are either dead or living 5000 miles away. Same with the relatives.
:sigh: I pray you find a plan that can help give you some peace of mind. My mom passed a few years ago. I would have been worried sick if she were alive during these times. She would have been in her 70s, and had really bad lungs due to smoking for many years. This virus would have been terrifying for her to catch.

So i understand your fears and worries. :hugs:
