Apparently on the news they were saying that someone from Massachusetts traveled here to the Chicago area and was in an office building here. It's the company I used to work for so I'm well aware of how many people work there. He was in multiple conference rooms and on multiple floors. And yes, he probably shook hands a lot. And then after he got home, he got diagnosed with COVID-19.

And the worst part of this? It was not reported to the local government. So now my own area is possibly infected and people are trying tot hide it. LOVELY.

Why don't you report it?? That is unacceptable..

Someone who worked in the building reported it to the local news station. That's how I found out about it.

The local government knows for sure now that the news station contacted them. It's on there now. They are saying there was no way he could have spread anything because he was asymptomatic, so everything is okey dokey, nothing to see here - but that's just not how this disease works. You can absolutely shed virus before having symptoms. It's happened many many times already, and part of why this is spreading so quickly.

This particular Coronavirus is not airborne. You can't get it just by being in the same room with someone who has it. You can get it from touching something that's been coughed or sneezed on and then touching your face.
The CDC says it is primarily transmitted by respiratory droplets in air within about 6 feet of an infected person.

Coronavirus hasn't gotten too close to Miami Dade county just yet from what I've read. But teachers are getting prepared in case they need to teach from online (I'm a secretary at Miami Dade college. )

Not sure what they'll do about lab classes, or about clerical staff. I can't really do my job from home. Unless they install phones in people's homes.

You could see about having your phone line forwarded to your cell, if that is an option for you.

I'm in Canada in an area where there still aren't any confirmed cases, and the amount of people who are like, "It doesn't really affect people under age 60 and kids aren't dying from it, so it's not a big deal" is astonishing. As if people over age 60 don't matter? Are these people forgetting that their own parents are around that same age? I'd like to see how fast they change their tune if and when this virus starts popping up here and community spread becomes a concern.

With all the conventions being canceled, my husband has lost 4 gigs that were carrying through April. Nothing on the horizon, either. This is going to hit the tourism that our town depends on deeply: Hotels, taxis, Uber/Lyft, big entertainment shows (all the cast & stagehands), bars, restaurants...
I'm just grateful that we've got some cash on hand socked away, and aren't depending on our investments.

Now, just to keep my hubby healthy. He's a very social creature, and bound to go stir crazy.
He's also prone to bronchitis when he gets sick. So...

If I cancel my doctor and dentist appointment, when should I reschedule them for? April or May? How long is this Corona Virus going to last? I need to call soon, doctor is 17th, dentist is 25th.

It’s not going to be over in a few weeks or even a month. And it is likely to get much worse before it gets better. That’s why I suggested you just keep them and get it over with.

Man, we just got a big outbreak here. About a hundred folks working in the same call center and their relatives have all tested positive. Our boss is now making us wear masks all the time at work (bathroom, cafeteria, etc).

A few of the new cases live in neighboring areas to me and visited some of the places I often go. We are able to check schedules, and nothing matched up so far. Good thing I did my weekend a little differently last weekend.

Outbreaks are going to be popping up with regularity pretty much all over. It does seem to be very contagious. The fact that it is a new virus that people have no immunity to is contributing to it being very contagious. With other common viruses people have varying levels of immunity and many people's system repels the virus, that isn't the case with this one. Even people with few to no symptoms are still carrying the virus because their system isn't repelling it.

They closed the local nursing homes to visitors, and will "screen" all employees before every shift. I'm not sure exactly what the screening consists of, probably a temperature scan.

So this article explains much better what the goal is with the efforts of containment.

The fact is that the health care system can only take care of so many people. This a known factor. When there are too many in need and no way to treat them then things get much worse very fast. So the idea is to slow the infection down enough so that people can get treated, cured, released and then be ready for the next ones. They call it "flattening the curve". It is an effort to keep the number of sick people low enough to allow all to be treated. Ultimately it will not stop the virus but it will make it much more survivable because treatment will be available rather than stacking people up on cots in parking lots. So this is what "containment" is all about. Slow it down until it either dies out or an effective treatment is discovered. It doesn't matter that most people handle it with no problem, I think its like 80 %. What matters is that it is slowed down, like a forest fire being dampened down, so it doesn't overwhelm everything and people then die in the chaos.

We had the first reported case in Turkey this week. We don't know the location in Turkey but were told by the government it's a male citizen who caught it in a European country, he's in medium severity condition and getting treated, and his family and others are in quarantine as well for prevention. Many people fear there might be undiagnosed cases but also it's unlikely there is a break-out as that would almost most certainly leak through social media, through one of the hospital workers, or their relatives, or the relatives and friends of the patients.

There is still chaos even here though. I went to the market yesterday and people were already stocking up big time.
