What is with a cat feeling the need to scratch/paw at the floor when leaving the litter box and then sometimes at or near the food/water dish. I understand the litter, but the food? Seems odd. Just curious.

A cat will cover its food to hide it from other animals.  That may be what your cat is attempting to do.

  Mooch has always done this.  Most of my other cats have not or just haven't done it as much. Mooch is pretty dedicated to burying her food. She used to try to bury her water when it was in a bowl.
