Hi guys. I’ve recently joined TCS. I am planning to get a kitten/cat. I am not able to zero down on the breed I should get. There are three situations.
1) I live in Mumbai, India. The climate here is moderately hot and very humid. The lowest temperature we’ve experienced is 7 degrees Celsius and that too in 1962 . But will the climate play an important part if it will be an indoor cat/kitten. It will probably be in air conditioning if gets too hot.
2) Availabilty of genuine breeds- The pet market here is dominated By dogs due to their easy availability. The most easily available cat breed here is Persian which is also not pure bred in most cases. And there are many breeders here selling Persians in the name of Maine Coons and Siberians.
3) I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. But I am pretty sure my feline friend will have lots of space to have fun. I have read in many articles that a cat needs a separate room which I won’t be able to provide at the time being.
And I will be a first time owner but I’ve been close to cats all my age.
Please adress my issues and sorry for such a long query

Glad that you’ve joined the site and feel free to ask questions if you have any and post them under the appropriate forum headings and and do check out the many informative articles we have here too Articles | The Cat Site

It’s good to check out before you get a cat I see that you’ve already some what found your way around and I hope you get your answers and if you don’t, do ask more.

Do post photos of your kitty for us to see once they have settled in.

Enjoy your stay and see ya around

Do you have an idea of what personality you're looking for? Activity level and how vocal the cat is are two important factors, as well as if you want a lap cat or not. Also, how much time are you willing to spend grooming?

A cat with a playful personality who gets along with me very nicely, won’t matter if it doesn’t get along well with others. On being vocal, I think any type will do as long as she is happy and content at the place. I can spend around 15-25 minutes per day for grooming.

If you want a cat with a BIG personality, one that is vocal and fun to be around, get a cat with Siamese somewhere in the lineage. Blue eyes and 'points' (darker color on face, legs and tail) will tip you off. They are bold, talk back, ornery, and just a joy to be around!

Yeah man I’ve considered Siamese also. How are they around kids and till what age do they grow?

Siberians are less active than the breeds I listed, but are very affectionate lap cats. They'll require quite a bit of grooming. They're one of the giant breeds, so you can expect males to get around 20 pounds; females around 15. They are very sweet and gentle cats.

I live in a one bedroom apartment, too, and the only rooms that have doors are the bathroom (which is barely big enough for the bathroom fixtures) and the bedroom, which is where I kept my kitten at first. She wasn't necessarily happy that I was sleeping in there while she still got used to me, but in the absence of a spare room it worked until she was ready to have run of the whole place. So in terms of question #3, I think it'll be fine if you don't have a specific "cat room".

Thanks. I’m planning to keep her in the living room for some time then introduce her to the whole Home

I was going to suggest rescuing from a shelter, so happy to see your above comment. Please come back and let us know once you've adopted your new cat or cats. And post pictures. :camera: We love pictures. :D
