Poor sweet guy.

It looks more like an abrasion than a burn to me, but of course I have no medical training. The weight loss alone is worrying enough. I think you should wait to see what the vet says and then report these people for cruelty.

Please keep us updated on what the vet says and his progress. I hope he makes a full recovery.

Sure, but wasn't the cat adopted by a couple? If one person hurt the cat maybe the other decided to bring him back to the shelter before any more harm was done.
If there is a $500 - $1000 fine for abuse, then that impacts both people in the couple. I still think if the cat was abused, they would be motivated to "hide the evidence", not turn the cat back in to the shelter.

I've seen this happen when a cat suffers facial trauma. It could be from a dog bite, another cat bite, or even being hit by a human or by a car. Make sure that his facial bones are in good condition and not broken. That can cause this swelling.

Poor little guy. I really hope that he's alright.
That's what I was thinking...another cat or dog could have attacked him, or a poisonous spider.

These are cat bites:
This one started with one single small puncture wound from another cat -

kitty is not feeling well. We gave him meds to ease the swelling and he is not happy. Very jumpy because he’s scared and he can’t see.

Luckily he will probably be going to a rescue tomorrow that specializes in abuse. I know the VP and she’s a fantastic person who will get kitty the love he needs.

That's wonderful news that he's going to a rescue where he can get the medical treatment and care he deserves. I hope he is able to completely heal and finally find a truly "forever" loving home.

I hope you'll be able to keep track of him and let us know how he is doing. Precious little cat.

That's great. Will your shelter be trying to press charges against the people who adopted him?

Please keep us updated.

Okay so I got the story. It's that he was hiding and when he came out, his face was like that.

Seems fishy to me because he's super outgoing and sweet but nothing can be proven so the best we can do is find him a super loving home.

Poor little guy...probably a brown recluse or black widow bite.

The people were schmucks for adopting and then not offering him a permanent and loving home. At least now he is in the best place possible, getting the medical attention and help he needs. Hopefully some kind soul will fall in love with him and he'll get the good home he deserves.

It did happen and really, the chances of a cat getting hurt like that are really slim, especially a tame housecat. It should not have happened at all, and looks very suspicious. But I agree that an abuser most likely wouldn't get him help. They would just turn him out to defend for himself. We should just be thankful he is safe now, he will be nervous and quiet right now because he is hurting. That poor baby need a loving family and I pray he finds it. iI they advertise those photos and he might get it.

I have seen this many times that people turn these poor babies back in because they are unsociable, 'hiding' when they first get them. The public needs a LOT more education on how a just adopted cat will act when they first bring them home. A cat is so upset, nervous, and scared about a big change in their life like this. It is VERY unusual for a cat to be at home the first few days, even weeks. They might not see them at all for days/weeks. But it WILL change, just like anything in life worth having, you have to work at it!

He just left for a kitty rescue! He will be going straight to some specialists and then to a foster home.

He’s such a sweet kitty. His eyes are swollen shut and he’s been poked with needles and fed meds but he never once hissed or scratched.

See that’s the thing. We give them guidance on how to get the comfortable and have an awesome cat behaviorist on staff.

I just don’t see this kitty hiding, at least not for more than a day or so. He’s so loving and so trusting even to new people. He can’t see because his eyes are swollen shut yet he’s still appreciative of hands he can’t see, that give him love.

He sounds like such a wonderful guy. I'm glad he was returned to the shelter and didn't have to spend too long at that place. I hope he gets the life he deserves from now on.

It is completely unacceptable that the adopters would return the kitty to you without providing a cogent explanation for the horrific injury. Don't let them off the hook that easily!
