I'm really concerned that you're saying "She's coughing quite bad."

Has she ever 'choked' on the lactulose.......had it "go down the wrong way"?

IF that has happened, I think you should have her examined....soon.

That's called 'aspiration', cats do very poorly with it and recovery can be difficult. It can result in "Aspiration Pneumonia". Please consider taking her in.


I used to give Miralax by mixing it into the broth from a can of Fancy Feast pate. I'd put the can into boiled water for about 3 minutes, then open the can and press a large teaspoon into the pate, extracting the broth and putting it into a small bowl. I'd mix the Miralax into that and present him with his "soup". Every day it was made with a different flavour and he seldom refused it. The whole exercise became a routine in itself and he certainly appreciated it.

I agree that syringing does not sound like a good idea in a cat who is fighting oral/liquid medications. It is best if the Miralax can be incorporated into food in some way.

This is one older thread on the subject, although the content is the same as it would be today. Using two drugs which do the exact same thing is called "therapeutic duplication" and is not recommended. I would try the Miralax but,, given the Trudy definitely has issues with constipation, if it does not work or if she absolutely refused to eat anything that masks it, return to the lactulose.

Given that it is a laxative, Trudy needs to stay hydrated and to eat her wet food. Any laxative can cause electrolyte imbalances and dehydration but I have not seen any side effects with my cat who takes it twice a day long term.

She only seems to drink from the tap
I have 3 water fountain s and 3 bowls of water

She has had a few colds recently I don't know why.. I think she may have picked them up at the vets, is that possible

She's not choking, I'm. Not sure if the cough is related to the lactoluse, or long term affects of a cold
She is eating I wouldlt say a lot
She's had another poo. Small but normal not hard
The lactoluse also had rubbed of some fur under her chin. A few mats have appeared and it's made her sticky

She's sleep s a lot

How can I encourage her to eat drink more

Fresh water and food wet food is always available

1/8th teaspoon is a good start. The usual total amount is 1/2 teaspoon per day. It sounds as if you have a lot of access to water for her; some cats are not great water drinkers. Sometimes introducing new or tasty foods helps. Toppers are expensive but a little bit on her food might help her to eat.

She could have been exposed to something at the vet's, but if they are careful to keep pets separated and clean rooms between patients it should not happen.

She's so picky

She's not a big water drinker

I saw, her last night to to the tray to pee, it was a small pee
Then Toby followed her in and he peed for seemed like an eternity
Toby drinks a lot and has huge pees

She may not be much of a water drinker but if she eats wet food it will compensate for that up to a point. My cat who has constipation problems is not a drinker either.

That's hard to say since it depends on why she's coughing. If medication has been aspirated into her lungs then only a vet can take care of that. If she has a virus, then lysine would help her body fight it off, and if she has a bacterial infection then she would need antibiotics. If she has something like asthma, then thats also something only a vet can treat.
