Trudy is constipated

She is a white maine coon 3 years old
Last Thursday I took her vets as stopped eating and drinking
Was told she was severely constipated and kept her in overnight
Did an xray and put on drip. Full of poo. Had enema brought her back
On. Tues she caught a cold. Don't know how. She's sneezing snotty Weezy. Not eat or drink. So I took her back as it was her post op check. Saw a foreign vet. And gave get anti inflammatory. Guess what
She's severly constipated AGAIN
HOW can this happen please
Gave her a. Mini enema. Done nothing at all
She's not got a temperature
Gave me yet more lactoluse and a bag of royal canin high fibre biscuits
She's not eating much at alll
Hates yoy giving meds. Scratch and bit me to death
I'm ti give lactoluse every 2 hours!!

If no poo in a week I'm. To take her back fir more surgery for enema again

How can. This keep happening

Hi, I know you said she's not really eating, and has lost weight, but will she eat canned food? Can you obtain some meat baby food that doesn't have onions or garlic in it?

Did the vets say anything about watching for dehydration? Is there anyone, maybe even a vet tech that lives nearby, who can help you? Although I'm not clear, how are you giving the lactulose?

Has the vet suggested adding Miralax? You can give 1/8th-1/4th teaspoon twice a day (but ask your vet). I give my girl 1/8th teaspoon twice a day because she is prone to constipation. I put a little bit of a liquid treat (like Churu or something) in a dish, add the Miralax (unflavored), put about a teaspoon or a little more of water in and mix it. I give this to her after her pills to help the pills go down and as a treat. When she was first constipated I was giving her 1/4 teaspoon twice per day, but after she cleared up and about a week + I reduced it to 1/8th teaspoon.

What was the anti-inflammatory the vet gave? Some pain medications can cause constipation.

She was on a, drip last Thurs night. Not dehydrated at this moment

She's nibbled a few biscuits and a mouthful of tuna. Not huge amount

I've seen her go in several loos trying to go. But nothing came out

Hi! I was able to order Clearlax in from the US to France, it took a week to arrive. I strongly recommend doing that if you can afford it, I think it cost me 20€ total for the product + shipping. Lactulose did nothing for my cat.

Here in Europe you might also want to look for Laxatone+, it's a paste that seems to be tasty for cats, and it's supposed to help with intestinal transit. Another thing that could potentially help is egg yolk powder - it used to soften my cat's poop, and make him poop more often as well, but I think he might have been intolerant to it, so I stopped. It seems to work for a lot of cats, though.

The vets should be trying to understand what's causing the constipation problem before recommending surgery... I'd consider taking her to a different vet, to be honest.

Also, if you're on Facebook, look for the Cats with Megacolon group. Not everyone in there has cats that are actually diagnosed with megacolon, but there are many people in it who have a lot of experience with constipated cats and might be able to offer advice on how to handle vet visits, what to ask, and what you could try to do on your own. I've found that the best way to get your money's worth at a vet visit is to be prepared with the right questions/arguments, because not every professional is going to have the level of care you would expect as a pet parent. Some of them also hold out on referring you to a specialist for longer than they should.

I can't choose my vet. It's a charity vet as I have low income and can get a different vet every time I go

If you have access to any of the hairball remedies which are sold in tubes or jars, you might try one. They contain various ingredients and won't cause any further problems as they only add lubrication.

I know that you got a run around with Toby, but I would not wait the 7 days if things don't improve. At least call and update them and see if they will bend a little.

Since there is no Miralax in the UK, try looking for Polyethylene glycol 3350. That's the actual ingredient of it. I actually use a generic brand, and I do think there is something similar over where you are. Perhaps you can ask at your local pharmacy (not sure if you call them pharmacies where you are, but wherever you go to purchase vitamins, bandaids, that type of things. If you find it, just remember that you do need to dissolve it in a little bit of water first, then I just mix it in with their food. It's tasteless, odorless, and doesn't congeal like so many of those type of things do. And it's not sticky like Lactulose. If she isn't eating much, add it to just a tiny bit of food to make sure she ingests it.

If she has a cold, she may not be able to smell her food very well, so that may be one reason why she isn't eating. You can try heating up some of her wet food since that usually helps bring out the smell. Not too hot though...just warm it a little.

Do you know when they kept her over night last week, were they able to empty her out? If not, this may not be a new occurance, but rather a continuance of the prior issue.

One last thing. Do you add extra water to her wet food? Hydration is so important to help with constipation. I would add a alittle bit of water to each of her wet food meals to keep her hydrated, even if she doesn't appear dehydrated. This should help soften up her stools.

Have you tried canned pumpkin ? Idk if it will work for every cat . But when mine couldn’t put I can her a little and she was able to go . Before trying talk to your vet . Maybe it will help

She only had 1 enema. Left her half full of poo
With toby he had to have 2 enemas 2 in the afternoon another following morning
So I'm assuming 1 enema can't get all the poo out
Seems crazy that 2 anathestic are needed to clear out all poop

I def think ages still bunged up

Her cold not as bad, she are small amounts but not her usual amount
She kept trying to go but couldn't
Theu told me she had a poo herself after the enema and they came her food and she ate it. This was last Friday before she got a cold
Probably stress and caught it there
