Some bad news today :( our little white girl, Clawdia, has managed to injure herself quite badly. Not exactly sure how it happened, but we think it happened when our other cat kicked her off her perch and she hurt her neck/throat when she fell off. The odd bit was that there is no visible external or internal damage...

She was a bit dazed but immediately seemed fine after. This morning we woke up to a lethargic kitty with a swollen face... and we immediately took her to the vet’s. They’ve done the whole works, x-rays, bloods, etc... and nothing abnormal showed up. The swelling, which apparently is a load of air trapped under the skin, however is not subsiding but has increased significantly. She is stable, but naturally we are very, very worried at this point.

The vet did keep her in tonight for observations, and just in case she needs emergency drainage or surgery. They also said that sometimes the tears are so miniscule you cannot see them on an x-ray... still, very worrying. :(

On top of that, tomorrow is the big day for our other cat. Who (with his brain injury) is getting neutered. Poor lad.

GOOD LORD! Yes, that swelling is alarming and astounding. Sometimes you can hear it crackle. Candles lit for BOTH of your fur babies!

Thank you both! Really appreciate it. We are not yet out of the woods, but Clawdia is stable and eating well according to the vet. We are going to collect her in an hour, and from then on it’s close monitoring time...

If she goes downhill, she needs to be immediately re-admitted. But the vet is positive, she stopped swelling but is pretty bloated. She is also off of the pain relief and doesn’t seem too bothered. I guess she just needs loads of rest for now. Poor little baby :(

We had a cat that had this, her whole upper back crackled and swelled up just like your cat. The vet said he had seen it several times when the cat receives a violent shake from a big animal, usually a dog, that separates the skin from the underlying tissue. She did heal eventually but it took a long time. Was your cat in a situation where this could have happened? Vibes for healing, I hope she feels better soon!

She was having a wrestle with our other cat, when she had a tumble. We think that’s when it happened. We aren’t 100% sure though as she seemed fine, and then the next day we woke up to a very poorly little fluff :(. No large animals have access to our flat. Our vet said it usually happens during collisions with cars.

It’s a pretty serious situation, but she seems to be doing ok right now. And her x-rays and examinations all came back ok. The vet did say she has an excellent prognosis and that 9 out of 10 cats heal by themselves. Still its hard not to worry.

Thank you! She is home right now, under supervision. Has a follow up next week somewhere. She looks and is acting a lot better than a few days ago. Back to being a bright little girl :)

Thank you, we definitely need it. She had a coughing / choking fit last night unfortunately and is now back in observation at the vet... the vet thinks it might be because she is still healing, and said this sometimes happens. But still, 48 hours of observation... they did say this morning she was happy and bright. They said our little ball of fluff is loving the fuss they’re making about her, typical!
