I have a very unique cat who absolutely LOVES to tip over water dishes, even when they are clean and filled with cool, fresh water. He used to drink from a running sink when he was a kitten and I now own one of those Drinkwell water fountains, and he seems to love that too.
Lately though, even though I do clean the fountain every week and am constantly re-filling it, he likes to stick his paws into the water and scoop it out onto the floor, and then lick the moisture off of his paws. He has also started eating dry food by holding a single piece in his paw and brining it up to his mouth. While the latter behavior is adorable, even if he drops a few pieces onto the floor each time, the splashing water is getting very annoying.
I can't tell if he is playing or signaling to me that he doesn't like it. I have tried turing the motor off, but he did the same thing. He still drinks out of it regularly, but then splashes it. If he is playing or not, is there something I can do to discourage his behavior? I am really sick of cleaning large puddles of water up two to four times a day. Thank you!!
