Hi, I came across an article stating that ingesting sodium benzoate is harmful (possibly deadly) for cats. I’ve fed my cats catfood with that ingredient before without any negative effects, so I was wondering how much sodium benzoate can cats safely ingest. I saw somewhere that it’s around 0.1mg/kg, but the website didn’t look very legit so I don’t know how much I trust it. Any insight on this would be great, thanks!

Benzoic acid and sodium benzoate can be toxic to cats at high doses (>200 mg/kg/day). Cats metabolize it more slowly than humans. FDA regulations allow a max level of 0.1% of sodium benzoate or benzoic acid in pet food. The cat would have to eat a ridiculous amount of food to get to that point, unless there are potentially elevated levels in the food that could lead to toxicity. Then the food would get recalled.
