I have posted in another cat group.. but I figured the more advice about this, the better.. this is going to be the longest post EVER! But if you have time please read the whole thing.. I am so desperate and any advice is seriously appreciated

I adopted a 15 week old kitten a month ago and knew she was just ending a nasty upper respiratory infection.. I saw a vet just in case and he put her on more antibiotics. She was 3 pounds when we got her.. she is so tiny and I knew we would need to help her gain some weight.. however.. things have gone down hill drastically.

Here are her symptoms:

-Weight loss, she now weighs 2.5 pounds. I have her eating wet food 4-5 times a day, and leave out dry food. Wet food is prescribed by the vet.
-Goopy eyes
-Leaking urine.. everywhere.
-Eating cat litter (we switched to non clumping when we got her. Vet said she would grow out of it.. but I’m thinking this is a red flag)
-No energy. Wants to lay down/sleep/cuddle all day. No desire to play
-Vet took stool sample and it came back very abnormal.
-Slight Fever
-Losing all strength in back legs.. unable to walk without being super wobbly or falling over.

All of this started about a week ago.. we have seen our regular vet twice.. along with a couple of phone calls. We then went to an animal hospital to a different vet for a second opinion.

She has been on antibiotics like I originally stated.. she is now on two different types of antibiotics along with the prescribed wet food.

She eats the wet food like crazy when we feed her. Will nibble on dry food every once and awhile. Still drinking water, but has to be reminded. I wouldn’t call her “lethargic”. But she has no desire to do much of anything but sleep or look out the window while laying in our window sill.

If you made it this far, thank you. Any advice is welcome. The vets have no idea what is wrong with her. They have thrown around the idea of FIP and let me know i may have to put her down if she doesn’t get better.. they are currently treating for the bacteria in her stool as well as toxoplasmosis. But aren’t giving me clear answers on what to expect.

I have had panic attacks daily.. and being 6 months pregnant with two other kitties who are showing signs of stress from all of this is truly taking a toll on me.

Thank you in advance, again... all help and advice is truly appreciated and welcomed. ❤

I’m so sorry to hear that your kitten isn’t feeling well. Does she go outside? Can you think of any possible trauma (falling from a cat tree, etc)? Back injuries can be a cause of weakness in the hind legs.

When I google weak back legs in cats I come across this article. I would ask your vet their thoughts on the potential for circulatory disturbances and kidney disease if this hasn't already been discussed and ruled out.

The best you can do is continue seeing the vet, hopefully, they can figure it out soon.

She doesn’t go outside... she started losing strength in her back legs about a week ago... the only thing I can think of is her older brother likes to play a little rough and has jumped on her a time or two.. but the vet told me this usually wouldn’t cause a break... should I do X-rays anyways?

I am so, so very sorry. IF IT IS POSSIBLE FOR YOU, and given that you have other responsibilities, it may not be, I would suggest searching for a university near you with a Veterinary Medical School. This is not less expensive than a regular vet, and can be more, but they are practising cutting-edge medicine with the most up-to-date equipment and diagnostic tools. If that isn't possible, this site, AAFP | American Association of Feline Practitioners , has a search engine that will allow you to find a feline specialist in your area.

I would recommend asking your vet about this possibility, and see what they think, if she should have an x-ray.

I think that Mamanyt1953’s suggestion was a good one. Vet schools have great faculty and resources.
