Hello everyone. I’m getting increasingly desperate, extremely concerned, I’m running out of money, and my poor cat is running out of time. I’m sorry for this long story, but I have a lot going on.

So here’s the story,

My cat is Cali, she is a five year old longhair cat. She lives indoors, and never goes outside even for a second. She is an amazing cat, I’ve always taken good care of her.

She’s on a gastrointestinal dry food from diet from Royal Canin that my vet prescribed years ago; and she has been fine up until a few months ago with eating. There is also another cat in the house, and I feed them both the same food and water and the other cat is just as healthy as can be.

Now for the problems.

About a month and a half ago she developed horners syndrome in her left eye, I waited a few days and took her to the vet, they treated for a possible ear infection that may be causing it. A week passes and the horners goes back to semi-normal, but her pupils were still different sizes.

I take her back to the vet a week later, she gets a shot for anti-nausea, because she started losing weight and I noticed she started sitting hunched over all the time (this is very important), and she gets some more antibiotics because she’s still not back to normal.

Week later, horners comes back completely in her left eye and she now starts throwing up in the morning, but not a normal throw up, she does a “ack” almost before she throws up, and you can tell it’s different than a hairball, this is hurting her. And she starts just throwing up while foam, sometimes not even anything at all, just gagging sometimes. Not really any food.

This is when I notice she’s not eating like she should be. There’s food in the dish and not two cats worth of waste in the litter box.

I take her to the vet and they give me stuff to rub on her ear to help her appitite, but at the same time I set up a visit with a neurologist 3.5 hours away, across the state for a possible MRI consultation.

Week goes by (I get screw waiting because of Christmas holiday), I take her to the neurologist, he suggest MRI, and xrays. I setup xrays with my local vet a week later (again delayed by holidays), xrays come back clean of any obstuctions. So I setup the MRI with the neurologist, thankfully they get me in within a week, she gets the MRI, it comes back clean of cancer, clear of polyps, so the doctor suggests a spinal tap to drain fluids to check if she has possibly an incureable disease, spinal tap comes back clear.

Over 4000 dollars later and the best people in the state tell me “I don’t have an answer for you”

I’m now suggested to take her to an ophthalmologist to have her eye looked at for possible glaucoma.

Where my cat is now,

I cannot get her to eat dry food, she will walk up to it and even lick it, but she can’t eat it; she will eat a few temptation treats, but she threw some up last night, so she is turned off by them now.

I’ve fed her baby food, she doesn’t like that now. I fed her puree cat food, that made her gag. I’ve tried the delectable a for senior lockable, she threw that up. I fed her cooked chicken and rice, she threw it up within 5 minutes. She ate some chicken last night, but then threw it all up two hours later.

She seems to be turned off by all food, but she in constantly asking me for food because she is hungry, but almost everything is coming back up. I was so excited last night when she didn’t throw up right away, but then she woke up from a nap and started gagging it up. And she only eats the tiniest bit when she eats too, so when she throws up, it all comes back out.

I can sometimes get her to eat like 5 kibbles in the morning of her normal food, and some nights seem worse than others, but now she’s just not keeping really anything down anymore and I’m running out of everything.

I’m not giving up on my cat. I’ve taken her to the best people in the state and I’ve ran test people told me I’m crazy for spending money on. I need help from someone who knows what’s happening to my cat.

To summarize:

Cat can’t keep food down
She sits hunched over all the time
Has Horners syndrome in left eye
Is lethargic

Please help me and Cali. I love her.

One of the most messed up things is each time I have to take her to the vet, they tell me not to feed her after midnight, and then I have to drive her hours on end and she gets all these tests ran, and it’s just making her worse. She’s not strong enough to keep “visiting the vet”.

Do you live near a university for veterinary students? I live semi-close to Purdue, and I know people who take their pets there. I would imagine they're more cutting edge and may be cheaper.

I wish I had more information or thoughts to send your way, but I've never dealt with anything like that.

Could she had developed some sort of a severe allergy to her food after all this time?

I agree, you should get a second opinion. Also, maybe it's time to look somewhere else than the head (brain, ear and spinal cord). Neurological symptoms can occur with diseases from other organs sometimes.
Has your vet ever considered doing an endoscopy?

I am tired of taking her places, she needs to eat and build her strength up. She has lost almost half her weight now and cannot keep going through tests that aren’t helping her. As for being more cutting edge, the place I brought my cat had the only neurologist in the state with an MRI machine.

I’ve had second opinions, she’s been looked at now by two different doctors (including a brain surgeon) and her tests and results have been reviewed by specialists.

As far as allergy, I just don’t see it, because she can’t eat basically ANYTHING.

Today, I have gotten her to keep down some chicken tenderloins I cooked up just plain. I’ve been giving her small amounts throughout the day, it’s the only thing she can seem to digest.

Can you list the different foods that you have tried? It might not be a food allergy/intolerance as you say, but given that she is having trouble keeping food down it is at least worth looking into. Chicken is a common allergy for cats and is in everything.

It still wouldn't hurt to ask your vet to consult with more vets. The link to the vet hospital I posted does courtesy vet consults as do many vet schools. A phone call or Skype or something is usually sufficient.

The plain cooked chicken is ok for now but definitely not for long term feeding. You can use a product like EZComplete to turn cooked chicken into a complete meal.

Have you looked into getting her novel protein foods that she has never eaten before like kangaroo? It seems like all the food you have tried to give her have chicken in it or is chicken. She may have a serious allergy to it, so even a cat food that is salmon or duck but has chicken fat or liver in it might set her off.

Hi!
If she's keeping chicken tenderloin down, this is AWESOME!!

Maybe there's something here you haven't tried, a different flavor, a different texture, something;
Try some raw egg yolk. Egg white must always be cooked, and some people cook the white and make a slurry of sorts by adding in the raw yolk.

Also you could try some Nutri-cal, Catcal or similar product that you haven't already tried.

Try making these recipes - they're just as viable for an adult cat as for kittens;
Kitten-Rescue.com

These below can be used on their own or combined with food. Also, if you heat the food a little - stir it so there aren't any hot spots from the microwave.

Or you could heat some water, about a tablespoon, and add that to canned food. A small glass works to stir it all up.
  • Chicken, beef or ham flavored (pureed) baby food such as Gerber Stage 2 - make sure there is no garlic or onions in the ingredients
  • Tuna and/or the juice, a low mercury/low/no sodium brand is called SafeCatch
  • Salmon, mackerel
  • Sardines (make sure there are no bones)
  • boiled cut up chicken or turkey with no seasonings
  • canned kitten food any brand
  • Try mixing in Kitten Milk Replacer - there are recipes on the internet or store bought
  • Fish, tuna or BBQ flavored canned wet food (I personally have never seen BBQ flavors, but...)
  • Lickable cat treats or pouch treat 'gravy' poured over the food
  • kitten glop (recipes in website link above)
  • Bonito flakes
  • fortiflora
  • fish oil
  • green beans, asparagus mushed up, lettuce, applesauce, mashed chickpeas, black olives
  • whipped topping such as reddiwhip
  • dry pasta
  • goat milk, or no lactose cow milk
  • whole cooked eggs (the white must always be cooked) or raw egg yolk now and then
  • broth with no salt and no garlic or onion or seasonings of any kind
  • There are also commercial toppers, Applaws is a brand that can work well as a topper
  • Some good treats would be freeze dried Purebites, Orijen, Meowtinis, Meowables, Only Natural Pet, Primal
  • There are also Lickimats that you could spread types of soft food onto, even plain unflavored yogurt, and even freeze it. Licking something can help a cat to feel better emotionally The LickiMat - Food Puzzles for Cats
  • shredded cheddar cheese, string cheese

Also, if she keeps eating the chicken and nothing above works (I so hope there's something, even if it's just reddiwhip and mackerel, and KMR) you could add furforlife or u-stew to it to help increase the nutritional quotient.

She threw up the chicken twice now so I think I’ve ran out of options. She won’t even try to eat it anymore. She wants to eat but now is turned off by everything.

She will try so hard to eat, but as soon as she eats something she throws it back up. I can tell she’s losing hope in eating.

If the boiled chicken isn't working maybe as an experiment you could try some boiled rabbit instead. Or Nature's Variety instinct makes some limited ingredient canned and wet food toppers with rabbit in them.

I can certainly feel your stress and concern, and my heart goes out to you.

I understand not wanting to drag your kitty out and about for more and more tests, but I do hope you'll consider asking your vet about consulting with one of the vet schools or the link provided above. It certainly couldn't hurt to ask, and you never know what a group of eyes can discover.

Try Kitten Milk Replacement. Use the powdered form and mix it yourself. Plus you cannot buy goat mil at Pet Smart and other pet stores. There is also lactose free cows milk in many supermarkets.

so I think I’ve ran out of options.
No, you haven't.

Try everything, and I mean EVERYTHING.

You don't know until you've exhausted EVERY SINGLE THING because you might hit on something else besides that chicken that she's able to keep down.

Have you tried canned green beans? Whipped topping? cheddar cheese? Eggs? Applesauce?

Unseasoned broth is becoming more readily available in pet stores. If you don't have access to it to buy, make some.
i Need instructions on how to make broth for cats...very simple instructions

I didn't come up with these items out of my hat - every single thing on that list is a food that at least one cat has eaten at some point or other.

Don't lose hope. She will pick up on your negative emotions!

If necessary finger feed her or syringe feed, but that list of mine has a lot of things, plus excellent suggestions from other posters, that you need to try.

I want to say thank you to you, for providing not only useful information, but positive reinforcement.

I tried the KMR, because out of that list, that was one of the only things I didn’t think of. I went to a store near me and bought some today, and she actually licked up a tablespoon worth the first time, and a couple hours later, I gave her about 1.5 tablespoons. She has kept it down so far and I’m really hoping this stuff will help bring her back.

I bought some salmon and some redi whip at wal mart (both I’ve not tried yet). I might try cooking the salmon tomorrow. My only question is am I supposed to just give her the redi whip by itself, or use it mixed in stuff?

Again, thank you to you and everyone else that has offering me suggestions and advice. I need all the help I can get, my mind is everywhere right now because I’ve never delt with something like this and I am super flustered.

I called everywhere in the state today, I live in Michigan. Everywhere I called had appointments 1 or 2 months out, one ophthalmologist was one maternity leave. I eventually found one about 2 hours away and they can only get me in Thursday, so I’m going to see if I can somehow get out of work to take her that day.

I will keep you guys updated on how everything is going. Thanks again everyone.

You are so welcome!

I'd try the whipped topping by itself, that's how my boy likes it :) he actually listens for that sound now, the big goof.

Oh my word this is fantastic news about the KMR!!

All the VERY BEST of luck on Thursday!!

I believe Michigan State has a vet school. Maybe your vet can call there to collaborate with someone in the meantime.

I'm glad she found something she likes. Hopefully it's a start.

Have you asked your vet to call vet schools, etc for a consult? It costs your vet nothing but time, maybe an email with more details.
