This guy has been calling my backyard home lately. He's a big bugger and makes a ton of racket. He won't let me get close enough to him, to get a decent picture, so I took this one from about 150 yards using digital zoom.
Pileated woodpeckers are the largest of the woodpeckers. I think they are probably over a foot long - not the little ones that are so common all over the country.Originally Posted by MargeCat

Betcha always wanted to wake up to the sound of rapid machine-gun fire, huh??? :-) Woodpeckers do make a lot of sound, for such a little bird!

They haven't even noticed him yet, even though he's been in the dogwood right next to our back porch. I shoo'd him out of that tree though, I don't want him poking holes all in it.Originally Posted by mooficat
wow, thats just amazing, I´d never heard of that particular type of woodpecker before......how are the cats handling it
Yeah, this guy is huge! He has a very loud and distinctive song that he repeats often throughout the day. He really started going nuts when a couple of big turkey vultures were circling around. Maybe he/she has babies.Originally Posted by Momofmany

Yes indeed, maybe the fierce bengals scared him off.Originally Posted by GoldenKitty45
