Odd Poop Habit

So noticed my cat has a littile habit of digging a giant hole in the litter box to poop. Once he assumes the position there is no poop. Then all of a sudden turns back looks at the spot and turns right back around to drop a load like it is nothing.

Note he never strains or cries.

Is this a odd habit or something more?
Does your cat do this?

Hi!
I've never heard about anything quite like this, it sounds almost as though he doesn't quite know/can't feel where in the process his pooping is.

He's never had an injury to any part of his back or tail that you know of? I guess if this continues over any length of time, you might want to ensure he has wet food and less dry so he doesn't run the risk of constipation.

He has never had an injury but does have IBD. He is on metamucil 1/8 teaspoon and miralax 1/8 teaspoon once a day.

Guess he is just a odd pooper.

Probably due to his IBD. As long as he goes, that is what counts. Anything else your vet might consider doing for his IBD, other than the above meds he is given?

Yes he is on 2.5 mg prednisolone daily. He was on 5 mg daily and every time we tried to reduce we had appetite problems. But for about month now we have been good on 2.5 mg. With hope to go down even more or off altogether.
He is on hydrolyzed food which I think majorly helps.

The IBD has been a long trial of many vets and finally a specialist that is very good.

It doesn’t sound that abnormal to me, just another variation of pooping behavior. I have had cats that needed to dig two or more holes before deeming one acceptable. He just needs to double check that he has a suitable hole before he poops. As long as he doesn’t seem constipated then I wouldn’t be concerned.

Kitties can have weird habits. Our kitten will dig 4 holes when she poops and spends an inordinate amount of time choosing the best hole to poop in. She will walk around inspecting the holes and finally decides on the best one. The box is kept clean so it's not like she's having a hard time finding a clean patch, just a weird quirk.

Had another kitty that was particular about the box. We had three cats so we had multiple boxes. He refused to poop in a box any other cat pooped in. He'd poop on the floor in front of the box instead. So we had to constantly keep that one box he liked to poop in clear of other kitties poop or he'd poop right in front of the box.

Guess it's just him.

My boy will dig around the litter box but never dump into the holes he dug. Once he finishes his last dig, he just assume the pooping position and bombs away.
Usually you'll expect them to dig and move forward to the hole that was dug and do it there but my boy digs with his front paws and then do it behind the place he just dug
