Hi everyone -
Hoping someone has had a similar situation and can lend some advice.
Mickey, my 15 year old male cat is not acting right and seems to be declining. This time last year he was perfectly healthy.
He recently received Radioiodine therapy for an extremely overactive thyroid. Before the procedure, he was losing weight rapidly and not grooming. His coat was matted and unkept. He recovered brilliantly from the procedure. He immediately gained weight back and after a few months his thyroid levels were stable and normal.
But now we are back to square one, he isn't eating or grooming. He dropped back to his pre-radioiodine treatment weight and his coat is once again shaggy and smelly. He won't eat food he was so very excited about just weeks ago. We've tried every cat food I can find. I knew this wasn't a good sign so I took him back to the vet who took all sorts of blood tests. All the results came back normal.
I'm stumped and saddened. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any rare diseases that seem likely? Symptoms are poor appetite, shaggy and smelly coat from a lack of grooming and low energy (which I imagine is because he isn't eating).
Thank you
