My cat likes to eat paper when she's hungry. Is this normal?

Or at least safe? She's about 11 years old now. She usually does it as part of her routine to try to beg for food. It's 2.30pm now and I fed her half a can this morning at 8am.

Thoughts? Advice?

Smoochie used to do that. Vigdis and Jilly will do that with plastic bags. I picked up around the house so they don't have access to either anymore. The plastic bags definitely were not good. Never saw a reaction to the paper.

my fem cat does this, usually on cardboard, as long as its plain, i let her tear it up a bit (she wont eat it, just rip it into pieces), good way to help keep teeth clean i think - also, play with cats just before you feed them (if you can) and they may not do this anymore - but be sure to up their food amount to compensate for more activity!

My guy will go after plastic bags...or plastic in general..

That is when he is refusing/not wanting his regular food.

He will starve himself, filling up on real junk; plastic, fluff, anything..
