Bless you for giving a second little one a chance at a happy life! Look for one that has a lot of the same personality as the one you have, you don't want a timid shy one with an aggressive one. If you have a girl at home go for a boy, ( they tend to be divas and take great pride in bossing the boys around), another girl is usually someone she would have to share with (and she won't like that.) if you have a boy at home still go for a boy, they will be great friends eventually. Keep us posted and lots of pictures!

When you go, let the cat choose you to a large extent. They seem to know when it's right. All our guys have. As for a name, they choose their names, too. Try out the ones you like several times. If you get a response, it's the right one. You may have to try some that you'd not thought of. I wanted to call Chocolate "Souffle" but she was having none of it. She didn't want "Peppermint", "Honda", "Apple" or many others. When I tried "Chocolate" I got an instant response, so Chocolate she is.

Be patient in all things and listen to you heart and your cat.

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.

There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat.

But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover -
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

[Thomas Stearns Eliot]

I think I got very lucky with Charlie's name. I had it in mind for a male cat, but initially thought he was a girl. His was a split-second renaming in the vet's examination room :flail:

The name comes from Charlie Chaplin, and he has shown me that it's quite apt

I went to the local shelter today and spent some time with the kittens. One in particular was extremely friendly, wanting to be in my lap. I picked her up and held her for a while, and she didn't resist at all. In fact, she laid her head on my shoulder.

I'll be taking her home once she's been spayed :banana2:

I love T.S. Eliot like no other.

He was an undeniable genius.

One of my favorites quotes from the Wasteland:

"April is the cruelest month, breeding
lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
memory and desire, stirring
dull roots with spring rain.”
T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land

When I got home, I decided to let Charlie smell me to gauge his reaction to strange cats. He didn't seem to react at all, or at least not negatively.

I hope this is a good sign :clover:

Two cats are always better than one. How is a kitty supposed to clean his/her ears effectively without help? LOL
There might be a period of time in which you think they hate each other and will never get along. This will pass. It took Marcy over a month to stop being a little witch to my boys, but things are cool now. She was even grooming Murphy last week.

I have a name for her!

She's a soft grey tabby, and her colors are reminiscent of the moon, so I was wracking my brain of astronomical and mythological names.

I've finally hit on Selene, the ancient Greek personification of the moon.
