Follow up post!

My 11yo Lola was hospitalized for 4 days after not eating and looking lethargic. It was discovered her L kidney is very small and has end stage CKD. Her R kidney is great, but there is a small stone in her ureter. This wasn't picked up on yearly labs because of how well her R kidney is doing. She spent 4 days in the hospital getting fluids/medications and her kidney values returned to normal very quickly. The stone didn't move, but she began eating again.

She's pretty sedated, which they told me was normal. She had to have a lot of sedation while in hospital because she's kind of spicy. She ate immediately upon arriving home (new food, Hill's k/d tuna stew.. man, does it smell gross) and used the litter box.

This morning I was able to give her 60 ml of lactated ringer's solution no problem (have to do that for 10-14 days) probably because she's still loopy. She's also on buprenorphine for pain for a few days and amitriptyline for her bladder/the stone.

She has eaten almost a whole can of wet food today as well as munched on some dry. She’s still very sleepy but a bit more alert than yesterday.

Thank you for your support and love from my first post, Lola and I so appreciate it. If anybody has any advice, words of wisdom, etc I’d really appreciate it. I will do anything to keep her healthy longer.

4 days! Wow you BOTH must need some rest. I have no words of wisdom, but you sound like an owner any cat’d be lucky to have! It also sounds as if you have some pretty astute vets. Please keep us posted! You may be helping others! PS: Lola’s nose is SO adorable!

Thank you!!! I am sooo tired. I was worried sick, but she made a remarkable turn around. I just want to get her feeling well again. I know I can’t reverse what’s done but it’s my understanding more damage can be prevented. I hope I can help someone else too!

I live in Boston and went to MSPCA Angell - they truly saved her life. Her regular vet is awesome too. Obviously this wasn’t cheap, but she’s worth it.

I’m reading your post to motivate myself that my girl Meffy will recover just like your Lola. She is completely healthy and suddenly vomited, didn’t eat and looked lethargic 2 days ago before being sent to the vet and being diagnosed with late stage CKD. She is also at the clinic now for IV treatment. It’s all gloomy to me right now but reading your thread gives me hope.

I have a few questions:
1) Did you visit her everyday to check on her condition?
2) Apart from being lethargic, did she also stop grooming herself?

Oh man, hugs to you and your girl! I cried every day (multiple times a day) so I know the feeling. Ask me anything at all (not that I’m the expert).
1) The hospital she was at didn’t “do” visits. They texted you 2x day with photos and updates in addition to speaking with the vet each day. I don’t know if that’s different depending on level of care (she was critical) or facility.
2) She didn’t stop grooming herself but her coat wasn’t great. She stopped eating, drinking and had facial twitches all in about a two day span. When she was eating (barely), food was falling from her mouth.

Thanks for replying. I’ve been crying since last night too and couldn’t even sleep.

Did Lola start eating during treatment or did she only start eating when she got home?

I just spoke to the vet and she’s hoping Meffy comes around and starts eating soon otherwise they would have to force feed her via a tube up her nose 😭 I really can’t bear the thought of it. Meffy gets very scared and stressed out being alone there I’m worried she won’t eat at all.

The vet also said they couldn’t put the IV on her because she kept trying to rip it or move too much so they used one on her back.

She started eating around day 2/3 in the hospital. Her labs were so bad- off the charts bad- so I think she needed rehydration first.

Lola HATES the vet- I have to have a vet that comes to the house because she pants and cries in the car then goes crazy in the office. She’s been this way her whole life. So to hospitalize her was so awful. They had to sedate her a lot to get things done - even just the ultrasound - they may have to do that with your girl?

They sedated her just for blood test but they didn’t want to stress her out too much so they used the Sub-Q method. Yeah the blood results shocked me numb. I was asking if this was real or was I dreaming. The levels were 5 times more than the maximum.

It’s great that as scared as Lola was she still managed to eat something while there. I hope Meffy would eat something too.

Do you have other cats at home? How did they react to her return? That’s another thing that is giving me anxiety.

I'm here for your cat's name, it was the same name my avatar cat had.
I have read your Lola is on bruprenorphine, which is what my vet gave one of my cat and it left her stoned for two days. Of course we suspended the whole therapy which would have been 34 days long.

I was shocked too. Lola had a great annual exam - then this. I think that’s one of the worst parts of all of it. I just had to trust the docs knew what they were doing and I was doing right by her - just like you’re doing!

Lola is my only cat, so I’m not sure what’ll happen with your others. I’d just focus on getting her well!

Thanks! She is kind of stoned, but getting her energy back bit by bit. Only a few days left of buprenorphine. It’s kind of funny- I have been the clinical director of a substance use disorder program for awhile and we give buprenorphine to many patients for opioid use disorder. Now I give it to my cat

Did the vet give her any supplement/medication while she was in hospital treatment?
The treatment here is very different from there so they only do fluid therapy first and hope the cat will eat on their own soon. But if I know the names of the supplement/medication I can ask the vet.

Just wanted to give hugs to angela638x angela638x and blumarine916 blumarine916 . My cat Mumu is going through a bunch of health problems and was also hospitalized recently and we are still trying to figure out what (in addition her to CKD and glaucoma trouble depsite surgery and eye drops) is going on with her and how to keep her comfortable. It's been 3 weeks of emergency visits, calling hospitals after hours, trying to get specialist appointments, researching online and posting on different boards ( blumarine916 blumarine916 I saw your Meffy on a CKD support group), starting fluids and supplements at home (which Mumu doesn't appreciate let's say), and taking poor Mumu to many appointments including one coming up today. Exhausting and expensive, as angela638x angela638x said. But I am hoping for all our kitties that this is a tough patch and then we can settle our kitties down into a stable and routine treatment plan. Just hugs for you all.

Oh man! Thinking of you and your baby. I am glad you know you aren't alone. Even now that Lola is home I am still anxious, so it is definitely a journey.

From her medical records, she was given: Cerenia (maropitant) as well as methadone and buprenorphine. She was sent home with amitriptyline which I am told relaxes the ureter/bladder but I do not see that they dosed her with that in hospital.
