WE now adopted the stray who was outside for a year after his owner died. He didn’t let us near him for months and a few months ago agreed to come live with us!

His name is Jack. He wasn’t a true stray maybe because he stayed in garden of the block where his owner and he lived. We fed him from the first two weeks as we realised he was alone. He slept in the garden. No one took him so eventually we got him to trust us. But he was going stray didn’t approach people he was one person cat (owner had mental issues so didn’t socialise him and even though some people knew Jack he didn’t let anyone approach).

As owner was often in mental or physical hospital he wasn’t well a lot, so the cat often (we now know) lived in a weird environment or outside. The owner did have people come feed and let him in, but when he died, they left the cat fend for himself and it was cold here, about 4 Celsius, at night, so we were worried. But he didn’t even let us look at him- so we had to give food behind the building corner and leave.

Congratulations! It most likely took him that long to learn to trust again. That poor baby! He is so very lucky you noticed what was going on and took care of him. He is absolutely beautiful! I pray you have many, many, happy years together!

WE don’t let him outside, he is now indoor only, but in the months we were taming him he even got to know another neighbor and would sit next to her legs when she was hanging her washing - very surprising for her as she knew him to be wild

He would be considered a stray since he has had contact with humans in his earlier life. A true wild cat, born and surviving in the wild, is a feral, which wants no contact at all with humans and flees at the sight of them. They CAN be tamed with lots of work, especially the young, I have a feral that eventually was touched, but it took years.
Your poor baby learned to mistrust humans, especially when he was abandoned, and like a lot of cats is shy and takes a while to warm up. They actually crave human contact, like with your neighbor, but are still very afraid. My cats disappear and are not seen at all until company leaves, even when my frequent visitor grandson comes, i have only one taht goes up to him. So the fear is deeply ingrained, even with house cats. Once a cat learns to trusts you. you will receive his heart and his love, a very fortunate person, you earn a cats love!
PS thank you so much for taking him in, inside is definitely the safest place for him, there are too many dangers outside. He is one lucky cat to have found angels here on earth!

I didn’t mean wild literally just that he never let her close before even with the owner. He was alone for two weeks until we got him to come for food but even then we had to feed him behind the corner and he wouldn’t eat with us watching him even from the window ! So I don’t think he was even a stray as he was like this just for two weeks - when owner died suddenly and he was in hospitals a lot too- so he was a bit stray but I thought a stray when he would be like this for months

He is also a very mild mannered cat. We have two others and they aren’t as nice. He is a peaceful animal doesn’t bite or scratch us (the other two do, they are brothers). None of them can live with each other so we have all cats in separate areas. Jack likes to sit in the bathroom and then we let one of the cats into the corridor and “Jack’s bedroom”. Otherwise one of our brothers is in a 6.8 sq meter room and the other cat is in the living room and kitchen - about 35 square meters. And jack has a bigger bedroom (and at times corridor and bathroom). It’s a bit difficult with three cats now in an apartment.
