The animal in question is a chipmunk. I have a few of them living under a tarp on my back porch. My kitty is quite interested in them as of late. She actually attempted to go through the screen door after this one on three occasions, all three times bouncing back off the screen pretty good. After that, she just sat and watched them, still poised to attack. Ill try to get some better pics of it when the lighting is more agreeable.
It depends on where they are and what type of contact they have had with people. The ones in the Rocky Mountain National Forest are so tame you can almost pet them. People have been feeding them when they are picnicing for generations, so they have no fear of people. I've even seen one of the little buggers try to take off with a sandwich if it's set down too long! Naturally, they are skittish, but many have learned that people will feed them so get "tame" pretty quick.
They may look cute, but they can be very destructive. They tend to build nests in just about anything, much like mice. Even worse, at least in my opinion, are their annoying calls. They chirp much like a bird, only more frequently, and for a longer duration. A single chipmunk chirps about 3 times per second, and often will continue this for 30 minutes or so. Once you wake up to 5 or 6 chipmunks, chirping 3 times per second each, you tend to get pretty annoyed with them quickly. At least I do...
