Hi everyone,

It has been awhile since I last posted on these forums, but I desperately need help once again. My cat was diagnosed with either IBD or small cell lymphoma about 2.5 years ago after a few weeks of ultrasounds, vet appointments, not eating, vomiting, and diarrhea (see my previous posts for all the info on that- we chose not to do a biopsy since she wasn't a good candidate for chemo anyways). Since her diagnosis, she has been on Prednisolone and has had a remarkable recovery- she gained back a bunch of weight, had an awesome appetite, and no health issues since then until now. I take her to the vet every 6 months for a full exam & checkup, as well as blood work once a year, and nothing has shown up to indicate any other serious problems. Her last appointment was last Tuesday (June 2) and they found nothing alarming- but, her weight has been dropping slightly over the past year (she is about 1 lb less right now that she was a year ago). The vet wasn't concerned since I told her that her appetite is still great, but she did encourage me to feed her a little more, which she has been, until now.

This Tuesday (June 9) she suddenly did not seem interested in her food at all (normally she is waking me up at 6am demanding it). I thought she may just be being a little picky, or sick of her food since she has been eating the same kind for the past 2 years, so I tried giving her a different kind & she did eat a bit of it. Yesterday, however, she ate even less, & later in the day she didn't seem interested in the different food either. The only thing she would eat was canned chicken, so I gave her a bit of that. Last evening she had a horrible bout of diarrhea & vomited quite a bit, but ate a bit of the chicken later in the night. Today, she only ate a little bit of food off my hand (just enough to give her the meds), & a little bit of the canned chicken, but otherwise she seems completely disinterested in food. She hasn't vomited today but I can tell that she is struggling with defecating- she goes to her litterbox frequently, strains to poop, and only a bit of diarrhea comes out. She seems very lethargic & is just laying around in cozy spots, though she still seems alert & enjoys pets/cuddles.

I called my vet today & they said they'll try to call me back later today to discuss, since she was just at the vet last week. Otherwise, I booked an appointment as soon as I could get in, which is tomorrow at 10:30am.

I just really want to get some advice, or see if anyone has been through something similar. I know that we're extremely lucky that the Pred has worked this long for her, but the sudden 180 in how she is acting is really alarming to me.

Additional Info -

Name: Yoshi
Age: 13
Gender: Spayed female
Medication: Prednisolone tablets (5mg, 1/4 of a tablet twice a day), vitamin B12 injection once per month (0.25mL)
Diagnosis: Irritable bowel disease OR small cell lymphoma
Food: Royal Canin Gastrointestinal High Energy canned food (one can per day), plus greenies

Hi.
I am so sorry this is happening to your cat, sound horrible.
Unfortunately I don't know how to help, apart from probably try to get her to eat something. try to give her a few treats, or what a lot of cats like is special cat sauce/soup, its delicious and not exactly unhealthy, its just not a complete food.
Maybe you could try giving Yoshi some of that and if she likes it give her a bit more, maybe mix it in with her wet food/chicken..

However I am not an expert so I don't really know, sorry.
Hopefully the vet will know what to do

Thank you for your response. I just tried mixing her food with some water & she ate a little bit of that, but not much. Do you have any recommendations for the sauce? I've never heard of that before.

Hi.
I'm glad she ate a bit.
Some of these links may only work for the UK, but I tried to find some internationally.

Weebox Lick-e-Lix Salmon - What I give my cats
lickable treat - I trust pets at home
Hartz Lickable Cat Treat - Never heard of this brand, but the only thing i could find on amazon.com

Sorry if these links don't help but at least you get the idea. 🙂
Great, thank you so much! I just checked & my local pet store does offer similar things, so I'll definitely go pick some up.

She for sure needs to see the vet, and get xrays done to see if it is cancer and has turned into high grade.

My first cat had small cell lymphoma with it possibly turning into large cell. She went into remission quickly with chemo meds, but almost 7 months later didnt eat as much. She wasnt losing weight, was getting b12 shot and the at home vet said just to watch her closely. She was picky with food so we tried various wet foods, and she would eat canned tuna. And even with being picky didnt lose weight. But then she started to have some troubles breathing, so we booked her in to see the specialist just in case. They did an xray to see if she had pneumonia and it turned out that her cancer turned into high grade and her lungs were filled with cancer. It was heart breaking and we opted to let her go. Hopefully its not the case for your baby but I would suggest a simple xray just in case.

Meat baby food...make sure there are no additives or onions, etc. Often the ham flavor will appeal to them.

Thank you so much for the response. I will bring up getting x-rays with my vet tomorrow at the appointment, if I don't hear from her today.

Wow this story could be ours. Cat is now 16 and has stopped eating much.

Have you tried appetite stimulants and anti nausea? These have worked in the past for my cat pixie.

We used appetite stimulants & anti-nausea meds in the past, when she was having a really tough time, but we haven't had to since. Thankfully, she really improved last night & was actually asking for food this morning, ate much more than she has in the past couple of days, & drank a lot of water, so I ended up cancelling her vet appointment (since she just went last week & the vet is really stressful for her). I'll keep monitoring her over the weekend but hopefully it was just a little flare up!
