As some of you might know, I am heading to grad school in September to continue studying history.
In order to pay for school, I had applied for some research grants. For the first grant I was turned down right away. The second one, I had to wait until the Spring to know if I got it. Turned out I finished 9th out of 28, and they had 7 grants to give
All this year I worked at an office job and saved up all the money I could. I saved more than I spent and exceeded my savings goal by around $3000
I was also offered two jobs at the university as a Teaching and Research Assistant.
Between my savings and the jobs, I would have enough to pay for school. It's a lot of money, but it's what I really want to do, so I didn't mind the sacrifice.
Fast forward to today... I get an email from the government agency that turned me down for that second grant. As it turned out, two people did not take the grants that they were offered, and they suddenly had a grant to give me!
That grant alone can pay for most, if not all of my living and school expenses. Add to that my two job and I might end up leaving grad school with more money than when I started.
Not just that, but I know that studying history is a risky venture. It's a lot of effort for a very uncertain future.
Now, not only will I be living my dream... but I will be getting paid for it
It is such a great feeling
