My 14 (almost 15) year old cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a couple weeks ago. He was put on Methimazole twice a day. He seems to be eating less now and his breathing and heart rate is a bit slower. However, he now seems to be heavily congested. It seems like he has a stuffed nose. He was also on a probiotic for bad diarrhea for over a week but it didn't clear it up completely. His poor little rear-end is a mess with clumped diarrhea stuck in his fur and on his back legs. I've tried cleaning it off the best I can without traumatizing him by putting him in a full bath. He just seems so pitiful. He's so skinny (4.8lbs). He's a white cat as you can see from my profile picture. He likes to go out in the backyard to lay around and comes back in filthy. I've caught him drinking disgusting water out of puddles left from the rain and he's started eating his litter. I recently started making his food myself and have followed the recipes from reputable vets and also added all the supplements he needs, including chicken livers and hearts, vitamin E, fish oil, vitamin B complex and taurine. He's due to go back to the vet this coming week for a check-up, but I feel at such a loss. He's still eating great and drinking a lot but otherwise he just lays around. I don't know what to do. Am I prolonging his suffering? Could the stuffy nose be just a cold or a side affect of the Methimazole? On top of that, he has a broken tooth and the root is sticking out, but the vet can't do anything for it until he gets better. It obviously hurts him as he's always shaking his head and can't eat on that side. I already lost 2 of my cats this summer. One from old age and one from mouth cancer. I can't stand the thought of losing him too. BTW, his name is Scooter. Baxter is my dog (who I almost lost last month when the doctor gave him Rimadyl for an enlarged prostate and it caused his kidneys to start shutting down). This has been a terrible summer. On top of all that my Dad passed away last month. When it rains it pours.
